Unmasking for autistics isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity for our mental and emotional well-being as autistic humans. But the reality is, unmasking isn’t always safe in the spaces we occupy. It’s exhausting to constantly hide parts of ourselves to fit in with societal norms. What’s helped you feel safe enough to unmask, even just a little? How can we work to create more spaces where autistic humans can exist without the pressure to perform neuronormativity?

When an autistic person says something, don’t read between the lines in the most neuronormative way possible. And if you do, ask for clarification without an assumption. And if you’re asked for that clarification, give grace. It works two ways!
