#CLAYFACE is everything I wanted and more, watching this movie it's so clear as to why Tom Rhys was handpicked by both James Gunn and Matt Reeves because it's an unbelievable movie lead-role debut. This screenplay from Flanagan is clear cut one of the best origin's written in the genre, & the material driven from BTAS with the Cronenberg/Carpenter homages had me internally & externally say "what the fuck" in a way no other comic book film has ever done for me because it's grotesque, distorted and appalling..
This movie does justice to the tragic vanity & the essence of makes the character of Matt Hagen so compelling. Really reminded me of Colin Farrell with The Penguin, Rhys' charm is so contagious that I found myself immediately rooting for the character but as the film unfolds...yeah. The themes of performing/acting mirroring Hagen's actions afterwards are just chefs kiss & play off each other so well. This isn't a traditional scare-horror but there were a couple moments that got me, it shines brightest as a tension packed suspense that utilizesfast paced-cutting masterfully. Naomi Ackie was also a standout in this movie, and there were a handful of dry humor moments that hit home for me every time. (Felt like a Cregger balance)
The 2.76:1 Panavision aspect ratio was a creative choice that perfectly encapsulates the look they wanted, and the usage of the Ronin 4D on this one was noticed because DP Rob Hardy MOVED the soul out this camera, such an incredible technical choice to be able to capture both the frantic suspense and larger scale/chaotic sequence. James Price's set work on this really captures the muddy, and pessimistic void vibe of Gotham in a way that makes me even more excited for BATB. This film does NOT hold back, and rightfully earns that R-rating, with some of the most creative, and imaginative usage of abilities i've seen in a while.
My con's with this film mainly stem with me just wanted particular narrative threads (can't specify) being pulled down a bit more, but that's just because I was so immersed into it. Just an absolute home run from James Watkins and for the DCU, I can't wait to watch this one again and most all...shows how much the boundaries can and SHOULD be pushed in this genre. 8/10. 🫠
fuck movie of the year, this is the movie of the century holy shit

Large part of Batman having the best rogue villains and these solo projects working is because they're in a setting (Gotham) that's written like its own character, reflection, and atmosphere.
It makes their own stories compelling in such an environment without the hero, Spider-Man villians just doing random shit in New York is pale in comparison.
Because horror fans are the best audience in cinema, they hear that a new good-horror film is out?
they are sat immediately, paired with this being an IP & DC fans also going...i'm both
These are impressive crowds at Monday night screenings of #Clayface at AMC Burbank and Century City.
James Watkins adding the best scene of the film to a Mike Flanagan story is impressive.
I would love to see him work on another DC film in the future, and this is why director passes can be good...they're the ones actually shooting the thing.
#Clayface director James Watkins added the third-act club sequence to Mike Flanagan's script so Matt Hagen could revel in the "dark glee" of his powers. hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

It’s one thing to watch someone become a monster, but another to feel everything that person is losing along the way. Tom Rhys Harries gives an astounding performance in Clayface, bringing an emotional weight to the horror in a way that feels incredibly personal. Happy anniversary to Matt Hagen, who debuted in DETECTIVE COMICS #298.
