Canadians have limited direct say over key parts of government, and weak tools to remove problematic officeholders: • You vote only for your local MP—not the Prime Minister. The PM is simply the leader of the party that wins the most seats (or can hold the confidence of the House). • The Senate is appointed (not elected) on the PM’s advice and sits until age 75, with few practical ways to remove underperforming or controversial senators. • The Speaker is elected by MPs (secret ballot since 1986) and is meant to be impartial, yet perceived partisanship and rulings have still sparked repeated conflicts and loss of trust. • The Governor General is appointed by the King on the recommendation of the sitting Prime Minister. This creates a clear conflict: the person holding the highest elected office effectively chooses the unelected official who holds reserve powers that could theoretically check that same office. • There is no federal recall process for MPs (unlike some provinces). Removal options are largely limited to the next election, party discipline, or rare expulsion. These features of Canada’s Westminster system favour stability and convention over ongoing voter accountability.
