EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham must “take the knife” to public spending in the budget or risk a Liz Truss-style crisis that will “crater” the economy and the government’s popularity, an ally of the prime minister has warned Andy Haldane, a former chief economist at the Bank of England, said he feared the government would deliver a “mañana budget” that deferred the difficult decisions on public spending and “doesn’t speak to the urgency of now” In an interview with The Times, he said that Britain was “close to being taxed out and maxed out in terms of borrowing”. He spoke of concerns that the government was failing to grasp how “precarious” the fiscal position was He said that the government needs to cut the size of the state and reduce taxes if it were to “unleash the animal spirits and generate growth” Haldane warned Burnham that he cannot “vibe-code” his way to growth, and raised concerns about the gap between the government’s rhetoric and the reality. He said that the government was effectively deferring the “day of reckoning” He also said that the decision to increase taxes on banks could show that the government lacked the courage to cut public spending. He said the move was “penny wise, pound foolish” and sent a broader economic message that if businesses make profits “the taxman cometh” Haldane said that while Burnham had the potential to be a “great prime minister” who could serve two terms, the economy was his “blind spot”. He said that the fiscal situation facing Britain was “precarious” “The penny has not yet fully dropped, including in Downing Street,” he said. “You see that in us having the highest borrowing costs in the G7, despite not having the highest debts and deficits. “It’s the old Hemingway [Ernest Hemingway, the author] thing, isn’t it? How do you go bankrupt? First slowly, then very quickly. The biggest risk to Andy not transforming Britain, to not serving two terms, to not being seen in the history books as a great prime minister, is not political risk. “It’s not those who sit behind him. It’s probably not even those who sit opposite him in Westminster. Keir [Starmer] lost the dressing room. Andy’s biggest risk is that he loses the dealing room. And then that’s an even more painful way to go, as Liz Truss would tell you.” Andy Haldane: PM risks Truss-style crisis if he dodges tough choices thetimes.com/article/9b12c00…

Tents are being handed out to early release prisoners by the Probation Service after it ran out of housing for them, The Telegraph can reveal. A whistleblower told The Telegraph that their probation office handed out about 100 tents in the past year to freed prisoners who had nowhere to live, but said that stocks had now run dry amid surging demand. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

“The Traitors,” which has been remade in dozens of countries, is derivative of other reality-competition shows. What’s different is the mood: it is both quaint and greasy, and perfectly in tune with our culture of incentivized fraud. newyorker.com/culture/critic…

Bela Bajaria, Pamela Abdy, and Cindy Holland are the latest to exit as mergers and layoffs reshape studios in Hollywood, leaving few women with the power to greenlight a movie. "It’s like a brutal game of musical chairs,” says 'Hunger Games' producer Nina Jacobson, who was previously president of the Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group. “There have always been more men at the very top than women and you feel that more than ever as the chairs start being taken away." vanityfair.visitlink.me/RBEl…

Nearly one in six British adults – 6.7 million people – are now claiming out-of-work benefits. In over 3,300 neighbourhoods, claimants make up more than half the working-age population. In almost 19,000 they make up more than a third. An historic shift from unemployment benefits to health-related claims has hidden this national scandal. In the last six years, the number of working-age adults claiming due to incapacity rose by 61 per cent, even as the prevalence of disability increased by only 16 per cent. It is not hard to explain. Unlike in other countries, combining multiple cash-based benefits with a mental health claim exempts recipients from onerous work requirements and unlocks support that can deliver a tax-free income of over £27,000. Throw in the fall in face-to-face assessments and several years of legal judgments lowering the bar for conditions such as anxiety or ADHD and the case seems closed. ✍️ Ben Gregg Article | spectator.com/article/is-wel…

Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office. The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of “lung adenocarcinoma,” as suspected from tests conducted beforehand. The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications. Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, according to the statement. vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/…

Excellent article in the Wall Street Journal on Britain's unsustainable welfare spending: — 7 million people (over 10% of the UK population) now claim at least one or more sickness or disability benefit. This is up 60% in the past 6 years. — The UK will spend over £100 billion pound this year on sickness and disability benefits. This is projected to increase to £130 billion a year by 2030. — No other Western country has seen such a rise in disability claims. In the US, 10.6 million people claim some form of federal disability payment, despite the population being 5x larger. — 1 in 7 new cars sold in the UK are under the Motability scheme; however, only 10% of cars are modified for a disability. In one dealership, 25 out of 26 cars they sold in August were all under the Motability scheme. — Charities, consultants, YouTubers and TikTokers have all sprung up, telling people how to maximise benefit access. Some of these videos receive hundreds of thousands of views. Over 1,000 people a day are signing on for PIP. — According to a Government survey from 2024, 25% of the UK's working age population could theoretically be classed as disabled under the current criteria and access these benefits. — A minimum wage worker who works 40 hours per week would take home around £1,880 per month after tax; however, if you are classed as too sick to work and claim PIP, you can take home £2,000 tax free per month. wsj.com/world/uk/united-king…

Skydance’s David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz have sent a memo to employees about the merged Paramount-Warner Bros., acknowledging that layoffs will be part of the process: • “Integrating two companies will bring change, including difficult decisions that affect our workforce. We are committed to handling this process thoughtfully and respectfully.” • Paramount execs have said they are targeting more than $6B in annualized cost savings over three years, with some of those savings coming from layoffs. • The merger could result in the loss of some 4,500 film and TV jobs in L.A. alone over three years, per a Los Angeles County report. variety.com/2026/film/news/s…

I used GPT-6 Astra to break an unsolved cipher to one of Napoleon's generals that had gone unread for 217 years. What makes this impressive isn't actually the codebreaking, but that Astra completed the entire multi-modal workflow in ~6 hours from a single image and goal. 1/6🧵
