Flags are odd little signals. What they actually mean is decided less by the person who put one in their bio and more by whoever is reading it.
A saltire or a tricolour and I am already inclined to think well of them. A European flag suggests someone who can manage a long sentence and still has some residual faith in the idea of progressive values. The flag of St George offers me none of these comforts. I assume that a point is being made, and that it is not a kind one.
It might only be geography, or ordinary pride in a place they call home, but I have never managed to treat it as either. My reading of it is far more settled than the red and white painted on roundabouts in Doncaster.
The flag is theirs, but the suspicion and reading of it is mine. That says more about the way I look at it than it does about the way they fly it.โฅ๏ธ๐ซ
