In early 2022 a new variant of H5N1 bird flu made its way to the US.
It wasn’t subtle. It quickly swept the country and caused massive bird mortality among all different bird types.

Remember a few years ago when eggs were more expensive than beef? H5N1 was the reason. It is extremely pathogenic to chickens.

There were a number of spillovers from H5N1 into various mammals, but most of these were fairly contained.

Then something completely unexpected happened. In late 2023 or early 2024, H5N1 started showing up in the mammary tissue of dairy cattle. It was a major outbreak.

It took several months to figure out this was happening, and by then the virus had spread to herds across the country.

Among those species is human.
So far there hasn’t been sustained human-to-human transmission, but if we keep giving the virus chances, it is just a matter of time.

Here’s something you should know about minks:
They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people.
They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19.

3/ Utah officials learned in mid-August of the outbreak at C&T Fenn Farms, west of Provo.
Had poultry been infected, the playbook is clear: If even 1 chicken tests positive, the US requires farmers to kill the whole flock.
There are no federal rules for dealing with sick mink.

Keep your head on a swivel today! Here's a video showing the predicted winds for the next 36 hours. Humidity will be in the 10-15% range, winds in the 20-40 mph range with gusts in some area up into the 60's. Good thing about these clear skies you'll know right away if you have a fire or don't.
