Now this is some interesting train station design and transit oriented development proposed for SenΜ“Γ‘αΈ΅w in Vancouver. Much better than the boring little boxes and slightly bigger boring boxes planned for Broadway Line. #vanpoli #vanre bit.ly/3lzL0sr

The point of Vancouver’s Broadway Subway is, of course, the long overdue subway itself. But so much more could have been achieved in station design - perhaps through architecture competition among emerging local firms or other. bit.ly/3aXSam2
A northern girl recently moved to the big city. If you want to live in Vancouver, you’re gonna need a good rain game. β˜”οΈπŸΆ

Xenophobic urban myths really should be left to Canada's opposition parties.
Houses shouldn’t sit empty when so many Canadians are trying to buy a home. So, we’re going to ban foreign ownership in Canada for the next two years, and tax the existing vacant, foreign-owned properties.

Crowd has swelled to a couple hundred at Vancouver city hall now

Well that was civilized. When you know safely voting will only take a few minutes and a short walk from home - can fit in a dog walk and bubble tea run. #ElectionsCanada #Election2021 #vote πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

They are excluding bikes and trying to override and ignore the consultation the city of Vancouver has already done. Basically, they seem to want to make Gastown into a Disneyland for the cruise ship industry while ignoring the people that live nearby and elsewhere in the city.

Never really bought the β€œwe don’t need to ban cars” argument. There are so many reasons to turn that around and say β€œwe don’t need cars.”

It’s a bit crazy when you think about it. Gastown should be car-free, 100% pedestianized. It’s so obvious.Just like any Altstadt in Europe…this sh*t ain’t hard. Just do it already ffs.

40 years ago today, CBC report on Vancouver real estate, "the most expensive in North America". Similar newspaper articles from 1920s. So which is it, "foreign buyers", "money laundering" or chronic under-supply? #vanre #vanpoli bit.ly/3BJCKfS

Not sure what to make of this "age of anxiety" claim regarding housing in Canada. If they're anxious about homelessness that's a real issue - but backyards for BBQs - not so much. bit.ly/38z9goE
There is not necessarily any correlation between wealth and income. If someone sells a $1 or $2 million home somewhere and moves to Canada, they do not need to qualify for a mortgage on that home & likely wouldn’t in first years in the country, but they already have the wealth.

also, speculators depend on chronic under-supply. how does this still need to be said? #vanre πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
Comparing housing supply and affordability to induced demand on freeways is not apt, because freeway access is free and housing is not. Congestion occurs when the absence of prices causes a shortage. A housing crisis occurs when a shortage of housing causes high prices.
Today is as good day as any to dig up this great @elpaavo quote explaining how anti-housers trying to apply the insight of 'induced demand' in transportation to housing discussions don't understand the fundamental mechanisms at work. cityobservatory.org/another-…

This crucial difference means that new supply is almost useless in the former and incredibly important in the latter.
Before anyone points to recent court ruling stating the foreign buyers tax is "not racist" - Canada has a long history of claiming its policies are "not racist" before eventually admitting they totally were.
