“If biblical studies consists only of writing about ancient texts as impersonally as possible, we can soon outsource this work to machines. It has its lasting value where people reveal how they see these stories – and invite others to look with them.” (1/2)
My prediction: Academic presses and journals will hold prestige to the extent that they are known for stringent policies against using Generative AI in composing publications. Conversely, they will lose prestige to the extent they are caught publishing works composed by GenAI.

As we’ve said in writing so many times, we’re building bodies of non-replicable research and journals are in an arms race over who can publish most of it. Science is gambling with its most valuable currency and will lose its second must valuable currency in the process: public trust. #openscience #ai #replicability #reproducibility #trust
How long does a finding about LLMs stay true? We re-tested 50 widely cited findings about LLM behavior (various biases, hallucination, etc). Within 15 months, most no longer held or had substantially reduced effects. LLM findings has short shelf life zou-group.github.io/llm-clai… Great job by @oq_35!

Imagine how foolish and gullible you would have to be to invest millions of dollars in a 21-year old college dropout claiming to have a magic little black box that can accurately run thousands of complex biochemical medical tests on a drop of blood at cost of pennies each? Suppose instead she had been selling magic beans? Or oil lamps you could rub to gain three wishes? Or shares in the Brooklyn Bridge? If wealthy private investors had been dumb enough to invest in these, would people still believe that it is Elizabeth Holmes who belongs in prison? Or rather her investors for being criminally stupid? Or Theranos’s board of trustees for being a pack of dunces who enabled the scam?

The worldwide admiration for Patrick Stewart could push @paramountplus and @Skydance to greenlight a new Star Trek series with thoughtful writing and theater-caliber actors. Rather than debating creative teams, the clearest ask is for Skydance and Paramount+ to greenlight a @StarTrek project built around commanding, stage-trained performances and careful writing.

“Star Trek” star Gates McFadden pays tribute to Patrick Stewart, praising his performance as Jean-Luc Picard for giving people hope around the world: “We want to believe in our leaders. Society suffers when we do not. If we fear retribution and feel there is no choice but to live in blind obedience to those in power, we lose our way. We lose belief in our institutions. Good leaders are those who urge us to step up and demand justice and truth. They spark our imaginations with their visions of a better future. They educate us. Without a belief in the basic goodness of our leaders, we lose faith in ourselves and our collective future. Our standards and principles take a dive. A leader is also great when they understand sacrifice and responsibility. This is why, I believe, people tune into ‘Star Trek’ or listen to Shakespeare, music or art of any kind. We are searching for hope and elevation from the daily numbness or despair. A desire to do good in the world works better with both kindness and focus — and it works better when we are surrounded by art and invention that lifts us. Jean-Luc Picard embodied that ideal. Patrick’s death means the loss of Picard, which for some hurts even more than the loss of Patrick Stewart. Jean-Luc gave us hope.” wp.me/pc8uak-1lI3RD

Words to live by.
Probably the most important lesson Picard taught me: "The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth, historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle upon which Starfleet is based. If you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened... you don't deserve to wear that uniform." Picard and Sir Patrick, the man who brought him to life, have not just left us with fond memories. They have left us with something to live up to.

I was a teenager when Star Trek: TNG first aired, and I’ve watched it countless times since. Sir Patrick Stewart’s Picard embodies humanity at its best: wisdom, integrity, courage, and the pursuit of knowledge. Thank you, Sir Patrick, for inspiring generations to be better. 🖖 thestar.com/entertainment/te…

Bring theatre actors to Star Trek @Skydance @paramountplus @ParamountPics
The global outpouring of grief and admiration for Patrick Stewart may push @paramountplus and @Skydance to greenlight a new Star Trek series that brings the thoughtful writing and commanding presence of top actors preferably with strong theater backgrounds that he brought to the franchise.

🚨 BOMBSHELL COURT EVIDENCE — THE IDENTITY OF “ELIZABETH” IN KRISTIN KNOUSE AND IZABELLA PEÑA’S PRIVATE MESSAGES: LEAD INVESTIGATOR ELIZABETH J. McEVOY. 🔱 NEW REVELATION — Explosive private communications between Kristin Knouse and Izabella Peña identify a troubling connection to Elizabeth McEvoy, one of the lead investigators at Hinckley Allen & Snyder (HAS), whose investigation formed the basis of Whitehead Institute's actions against Professor David M. Sabatini. In August 2021, @WhiteheadInst Director Ruth Lehmann (@REMLehmann) publicly announced that concerns arising from an institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) survey had led to the appointment of Hinckley Allen & Snyder LLP to investigate the @DMSabatini laboratory. She cited the investigation's findings in announcing Sabatini's immediate departure from Whitehead and HHMI. Elizabeth McEvoy was one of the lead investigators involved in that inquiry — the very investigation whose findings carried devastating consequences for Sabatini's scientific career. Now consider the extraordinary private message Kristin Knouse sent to Izabella Peña on October 18, 2021: 🔴 “Yea I mean before my interviews they prepped me intensely. But it really helped because as Elizabeth and WI said they were completely convinced.” That “Elizabeth” is Elizabeth McEvoy — one of the lead investigators entrusted with conducting the supposedly independent inquiry. “COMPLETELY CONVINCED.” These words, appearing in Knouse's own private communications, raise serious questions about the impartiality of the investigation, the preparation of witnesses, and whether investigators approached the evidence with an open mind. An investigation with such devastating professional consequences must itself be held to the highest standards of independence, fairness, and accountability. 📑 REVIEW THE ORIGINAL COURT EVIDENCE BELOW. 🔱 ScienceGuardians™ Legal and Investigative Team MORE COURT EVIDENCE. 🚨 BOMBSHELL COURT EVIDENCE EXPOSES A SHOCKING FOCUS ON PERCEPTION OVER TRUTH — KRISTIN KNOUSE'S PRIVATE MESSAGES REVEAL “THE LONG GAME” IN THE DAVID M. SABATINI ORDEAL. 🔱 NEW REVELATION — Court evidence exposes extraordinary private communications between Kristin Knouse and Izabella Peña, revealing discussions of perception, personal hostility, intensive interview preparation, and institutional support. On October 18, 2021, Knouse recounted advice she had received: 🔴 “But she said something like ‘Kristin it’s not about truth but perception…you want to play the long game’” In the same conversation, Knouse acknowledged her personal hostility toward Sabatini: 🔴 “It’s the same about me not being able to show how angry I am or how much I hate him because it feeds his story that I’m a resentful bitch.” She also described the preparation she received before her interviews: 🔴 “Yea I mean before my interviews they prepped me intensely. But it really helped because as Elizabeth and WI said they were completely convinced.” Izabella Peña subsequently wrote: 🔴 “She said the same: the long game” And: 🔴 “And she said the WI is on my side” Coming after our previous revelations concerning Whitehead's investigation, the documented communications involving @MIT Professor Sangeeta Bhatia (@snbhatia), and the institutional decisions that devastated Sabatini's career, Exhibit 228 adds another deeply troubling dimension to the documentary record. These are the participants' own contemporaneous private messages, documenting their accounts of interview preparation, personal hostility, advice concerning perception rather than truth, a long-term approach, and institutional support. 📑 REVIEW THE ORIGINAL COURT EVIDENCE BELOW. 🔱 ScienceGuardians™ Legal and Investigative Team MORE COURT EVIDENCE. 🚨 BREAKING: The Committee for Academic Freedom (CAF) has written to Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) on behalf of two senior academics who are refusing to complete mandatory training requiring assent to contested theoretical propositions about “unconscious bias”, potentially jeopardising their career progression and professional opportunities. The dispute concerns an assessment within What is Unconscious Bias? — part of QMUL’s Introducing Inclusion course, which is “mandatory for all staff”. The assessment requires participants to affirm that “unconscious biases help us to react quickly but can cloud our judgement”, and to identify accepting that “we have unconscious biases” as helpful. The accompanying feedback declares that such acceptance is “the first step to combating their negative effects”. Informed by their scholarly research, the academics we’re supporting dispute these propositions and have refused to complete the assessment rather than give answers contrary to their convictions. Under the assessment’s all-or-nothing marking system, refusing to affirm both propositions caps a participant’s score at 60%, below the 80% pass mark. Yet passing is a condition of eligibility for promotion, professorial review, including decisions on remuneration, and participation in recruitment and promotion panels. Although influential in social-justice-oriented scholarship, the concept of unconscious bias is contested within psychology, with researchers disagreeing about what it means, whether the processes in question are necessarily unconscious, and whether they exert a causal influence on judgement. Peer-reviewed research also questions whether acknowledging such biases improves behaviour. QMUL is of course entitled to provide training on its preferred theory of bias. But it remains just that: a theory. When such training is mandatory, requires staff to pass an assessment, and is tied to professional opportunities, there is a clear risk of compelling academics to affirm propositions they simply don’t believe. That’s why we’ve proposed a simple solution: amend the assessment so that academics who don’t all think alike can demonstrate understanding without having to endorse its underlying assumptions. Should QMUL decline to address these concerns, CAF is prepared to fund legal counsel to assist the academics, should they wish, in pursuing an internal grievance and subsequent complaint to the OfS. We believe there are strong grounds for such a complaint, given that such training may breach QMUL’s statutory duties to secure freedom of speech and academic freedom. Consistent with Article 10 protections against compelled expression, the Office for Students has also warned that universities “should not require training or induction that imposes a requirement on the person completing the training actively to endorse any viewpoint or value-judgement”. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated case. As CAF knows from its casework, universities often impose mandatory training in which the distinction between “understanding” and “endorsing” contested ideas becomes blurred. That’s why we hope this intervention marks the beginning of a wider pushback against compelled intellectual conformity on campus. If you’re an academic with similar concerns about mandatory training at your institution, get in touch. CAF can assess your case and, where appropriate, secure specialist legal advice and raise the matter with your university on your behalf. Something that all of the "decolonize space" nuts consistently fail to recognize is that China does not give a single fuck what they think.
China has officially declared today that two Chinese astronauts will land on the Moon before 2030.
