Great leadership starts with taking care of your people. At this year’s 79th Annual U.S. Deputy Wardens Conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas, @BOPDepDirector reminded attendees that strong leaders invest in their staff to ensure they are supported and treated properly. His remarks centered around a former warden who shared that, “Your staff won’t treat the customers any better than they are treated.” Supporting correctional professionals strengthens our mission and reinforces the critical role they play in public safety.

What an inspiration @AliceMarieFree is to those in prison. Her story of how she carried herself and mentored so many others while she was in prison, challenges and motivates others to do the same. Was a joy to tour her back in the prison she spent so much time at.
Two weeks ago, I returned to Carswell for the first time since leaving in 2013 with the incredible team from @GodBehindBars. Carswell was my home for more than a decade before I was transferred to another federal prison. Five years later, @RealDonaldTrump granted me clemency. Walking back through those gates brought back a flood of memories. I stood outside the tiny cell where four women shared one small space and sat again where I studied, wrote plays, prayed, and dreamed about a future I could not yet see. I missed my family every day. But I never stopped living. I made real friends, grew in my faith, helped other women with their legal cases, and tried to bring hope wherever I could. The most moving moment was praying with the women and watching more than 60 of them be baptized. I wanted them to know that their story is not over—and that if they keep growing, keep believing, and prepare themselves, one day I hope I might have the privilege of bringing some of their cases to the President. Thank you to God Behind Bars, @BOPDepDirector Josh Smith, Warden Tyal Rule, and the entire Carswell staff for welcoming me back and for the difficult work of making our prisons safer, more humane, and more focused on rehabilitation. My second chance is why I devote my life to helping others pursue theirs. To God be the glory. 🙏🏽❤️🇺🇸

As we conclude the #NationalWardenConference, we extend our sincere gratitude to every speaker who invested their time, expertise, and leadership in developing the Bureau's current and future wardens. A special thank you to @ATFHQ for graciously hosting us in their auditorium and for taking the time to engage with our Wardens despite their own budget challenges. Most importantly, every speaker donated their time to support this conference and not a single presenter was paid. Their commitment to developing servant leaders and strengthening the future of corrections made this event possible. Thank you to all who helped make this Conference a success. Together, we are preparing our leaders to better serve our staff, institutions, and the mission. #REDEFINE

Wardens were out of their seats today as Stephanie Chung broke down the power of conversational intelligence. She reminded us how essential it is to move those we lead from a place of mistrust to trust by using the ALLY framework Ask, Listen, Learn, and You Take Action. A powerful reminder that trust is built one intentional conversation at a time. #REDEFINE #NationalWardensConference

Every great turnaround begins with a single question: What if? On the next episode of #TransparencyTalks we flip the script with @BOPDepDirector Smith as he sits down with @BOPDirector Marshall to talk about his first year of leadership and how he intentionally decided to lean into the hard work needed to rebuild, restore, and reimagine the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Change isn’t just possible; it’s powerful.

📣 Prison Fellowship is making historic advances in the @OfficialFBOP as we mark 50 years of ministry! “This is a full-circle moment for Prison Fellowship and me personally,” said @RiceMinus, president and CEO of Prison Fellowship. “The federal prison system is where our ministry was born 50 years ago, and as someone who worked for years to pass the First Step Act, it’s a joy to see the law implemented as intended. Under the new era of leadership with @BOPDirector and @BOPDepDirector, we are seeing the doors open to partnerships with faith and community-based organizations like never before.” Read more about this historic milestone here: pulse.ly/nrxlcg3acc

🎤 Behind every young person’s decision is often at the influence of an adult; someone who showed up, spoke life into them, or helped them see beyond their circumstances. BOP proudly welcomes volunteers and their experiences that remind inmates there’s more waiting beyond incarceration: opportunity, purpose, and the chance to rewrite their story. Today, @BOPDepDirector Smith spoke on a panel hosted by Athletes for America at the America First Policy Institute, an event focusing on youth mentorship and the impact it has on reducing youth crime. #CrimePrevention #Mentorship.
