ALT Black and white illustration. A woman with long black hair stands surrounded by roses. She is holding a tarot card. Her dress is ornate and appears to be from the 1600s. It has a high, starched ruff which drips with jewels. To her left is a floating version of her own head but with eyes wide and a blood smeared mouth.

Arthur Conan Doyle died #OTD 1930. We owe him so much. Holmes & Watson have enriched our lives immeasurably as has the worldwide Sherlockian community. We hope that ACD found the Summerland he believed in.

The Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley (Gráinne Ní Mháille), was one of the most fierce of “femynyne sea captains” to ever sail the seas. In 1593 she refused to bow to the Queen of England as she negotiated the release of her sons.
