This week's #UNGA joint First-Sixth Committee side event, on the legacy of the 1996 ICJ Advisory Opinion on legality of the threat or use of nuclear weapons, was a great opportunity to reflect on the decision's impact, 30 years on, and how the facts and law have evolved since.
“Nuclear disarmament is not merely a political aspiration, but an international legal obligation that demands meaningful action.”

Nuclear deterrence has always meant threatening to incinerate civilians to make leaders behave. The terror isn't a corruption of the doctrine. It IS the doctrine. theconversation.com/russias-…

There’s a worrying trend at the United Nations: more and more civil society organizations are being blocked from participating in our meetings and processes. Last week, Sweden joined a group of countries in highlighting this development. See our statement here: swedenabroad.se/en/embassies…

Spending that much money on nukes is insane, esp for @NATO states. US, UK and France outspend Russia 10 times, and yet there is no sense of being secure from Russian nuclear blackmail at all in Europe. Nuclear Weapons are an outdated, expensive and ineffective security strategy.
How much public funds did the 9 nuclear armed states waste on nuclear weapons? At a time when the cost of living is soaring and millions struggle to afford food and fuel, this is outrageous. Read more here: icanw.org/2025_nuclear_weapo…

While engaged in unprecedented (by post-Cold War standards) nuke arsenal enhancements, competition, and arms control dismantlement, the nuke states managed to water down and eventually prevent final consensus declaration at Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference.
After four weeks of negotiations at UN Headquarters in New York, the 11th Review Conference of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) ended on Friday without consensus on a final declaration.

High Level Conference on Humanity in War to convene in Jordan on 7 December 2026.
Compliance w/ international humanitarian law and preserving a minimum of humanity in war must be a political priority of states if they want these wars to end & their societies to recover.

Most nations in Asia and the Pacific want to see urgent global action to eliminate nuclear weapons. That’s why more than 20 of them met in Jakarta to discuss regional and global efforts to implement the landmark UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Replying to @NATO
@NATO statement to the #NPT2026 RevCon says:
"Allies reject any attempt to delegitimise nuclear deterrence", while criticising the buildup and modernisation in countries outside the alliance. It's a double standard that you will not get away with. Either the rules apply, or not.
I spoke with Reuters about the upcoming #NPT Review Conference and #NATO|s strong commitment to the treaty as the cornerstone of the global non-proliferation architecture👇

Delighted that Somalia’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol have entered into force today, the legal basis for nuclear verification by @IAEAorg.
I thank @MOFASomalia’s Foreign Minister @AbdisalamDhaay for this important step, reaffirming 🇸🇴’s commitment to non-proliferation. This brings us closer to the universalization of the CSA as required by the NPT, key to trust and confidence in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

I think it’s interesting that people are so shocked by the idea of “normalizing the language of nuclear annihilation”.
This was what nuclear deterrence always is. Any state (& person) that supports nuclear deterrence as a policy must be ready to wipe out a whole civilization
No one thought Trump was threatening to use nuclear weapons, but this language tends to normalize the language of nuclear annihilation: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again." Missing the forest for the trees. trib.al/WGg00Es
