I feel like I have more ‘quality’ ideas than I did when I was younger and that inspires me to see those meaningful ideas through. I’ve got about twenty songs ‘in the bag’ for future solo projects, and the oddest part is, I actually like most of them! Go figure…

A lot of students are told, “Well here’s this style and here’s that style.” But if they can’t understand how the instrument was evolving at that time or what was happening in the rhythm section at that time, they have kind of a disconnect.
It doesn’t paint a full picture.

For "Other Voices!!” I included some candid dialogue before and after a few songs to give the listener a little ‘audio peek’ behind-the-scenes when the tracks were cut . . . fun stuff!!

Johnny: If you've only written five songs in your life, you love all five . . . they’re your “children." If you've written 35 or 40 songs, you start to look back at a lot of those kids and ask, "What was I thinking?"

I constantly listen to music with a critical ear, which I’ve finally realized is both a blessing and a curse… I can’t just relax and listen to a song without picking it apart, but I also realize what a gift being able to do that is. What the hell… it's my career.

When it comes to developing a killer groove, a system based in MOTIONS makes waaay more sense than one based in patterns. #drumming

Huey: Playing in a band the way we do it, as a team deal, when you’re in the pocket, it’s the most exhilarating feeling in the world. The song literally plays and sings itself. You’re singing along but you’re in the pocket and it’s just carrying you with it.

Regarding songs I write for myself or outside artists, there's no formula. If I come up with a good lyric, I'll try and wrap suitable music around it. If I have a strong musical idea I can’t live without, I’ll try hard to find the right lyric.

To me, "the pocket" is allowing the stick time to come up and then fall back down so it's not in a hurry. If we only think about the "down," we're always going to be in a hurry. Instead, playing in the pocket should be, "Hey, baby. Here I am. I'm dropping in."

A lot of drummers wonder, "How can I make a living in this business?" If you know how to play classic styles of music, you will make a living in this business. The guys that survive are the ones that know how to play a lot of different styles.
