We’re not fools. Absolute bollocks.
WHAT A FUCKING DISGRACE. AND THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING. I am absolutely furious about what is happening. Putin asks for his gratitude to be conveyed to US First Lady Melania Trump for her efforts to help bring children home. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?! This is coming from a dictator under whose rule Russia has deported and forcibly transferred Ukrainian children, separated them from their families, imposed Russian identity upon them, and subjected them to militarisation. And this is not something I am making up. These crimes have been documented and investigated by international institutions. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova over the alleged war crimes of unlawfully deporting and transferring Ukrainian children. International organisations have documented the Russification, ideological indoctrination, and militarisation of Ukrainian children under Russian occupation. CHILDREN! They are deprived of the opportunity to live normal lives in their own country, only to be raised within a system that justifies war against their homeland. And after all this, Putin wants to express gratitude for “saving children”?! How the hell does the world allow this man to appropriate the language of humanitarianism when his own state is responsible for crimes against Ukrainian children? AND DONALD TRUMP! I am fucking outraged by the way your administration continues to normalise engagement with Putin while Russia violates human rights, international humanitarian law, and Ukraine’s sovereignty. You are the President of the United States of America. Your decisions and your words have consequences. And when a dictator receives international attention and political legitimacy without accountability for his crimes, that sends a dangerous message. UKRAINIAN CHILDREN ARE NOT TOOLS FOR DIPLOMATIC PUBLIC RELATIONS. They are not Russian children. They are not Putin’s trophies. And they are not props for his propaganda performances. HERE IS WHAT INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATORS HAVE ALREADY DOCUMENTED: UNITED NATIONS — 12 MARCH 2026 The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine verified the deportation or forcible transfer of 1,205 Ukrainian children. The Commission concluded that Russian authorities had committed crimes against humanity through the deportation, forcible transfer, and enforced disappearance of children. Approximately 80% of the children whose cases were investigated had not returned. OSCE — 9 JULY 2026 An independent expert mission documented the systematic militarisation and ideological indoctrination of Ukrainian children by the Russian Federation. The findings describe practices aimed at erasing Ukrainian identity and imposing loyalty to the occupying power. TORTURE FACILITIES IN KHERSON Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, reported the discovery of ten detention and torture facilities in Kherson, including one with a separate cell where children had been held. Evidence of the mistreatment and torture of children was also reported. AND AFTER ALL THIS, WE ARE SUPPOSED TO LISTEN TO PUTIN EXPRESS GRATITUDE FOR “SAVING CHILDREN”? THIS MUST NEVER BE NORMALISED. The world should not be seeking expressions of gratitude from those responsible for the abduction and unlawful transfer of children. It should be demanding the return of every unlawfully deported or transferred Ukrainian child, independent international monitoring, and accountability for those responsible. We will not allow crimes against our children to be transformed into a beautiful diplomatic story. We will continue speaking the truth, documenting crimes, and demanding justice. UKRAINIAN CHILDREN MUST COME HOME. TO UKRAINE. #BringUkrainianChildrenHome #RussiaWarCrimes #Ukraine #HumanRights #ICC #StandWithUkraine

Story of Cavafy & of Rum (Greek) Yeniköy appears in my upcoming The Bosphorus: A Jouney, due out on 7 January. @HurstPublishers
Yeniköy Panayia kilisesi avlusunda Konstantin Kavafis'in büstü.

Friar Park is near where one of my aunts used to live. George was very private but local people were really pleased that he restored Friar Park rather than change it.
George Harrison stands at the gates of Friar Park, staring at what most people would call a disaster. The Victorian mansion is decaying. Grass grows through the floors. The once-famous gardens are wild and overrun. Greenhouses have collapsed. Grottoes are buried. Paths have vanished under decades of neglect. He’s 27. The Beatles have just broken up. He could go anywhere. Do anything. The world is waiting for his next move. Instead, he buys the ruin and starts digging. Not as a hobby. As a way of life. He hires ten gardeners and works beside them from dawn until midnight, hands in the soil. His sister-in-law sees the place and asks what he’s thinking. George doesn’t explain. He just keeps working. His son Dhani grows up watching his father gardening by moonlight, squinting in the dark because the shadows hide the imperfections that bothered him during the day. The music industry keeps calling — albums, tours, interviews. More George Harrison, the Beatle. George wants to plant trees. Friar Park isn’t just a garden. It’s a strange Victorian dream: caves, tunnels, a four-acre Alpine rock garden topped with a miniature Matterhorn, and gnomes everywhere. He even photographs himself among them for All Things Must Pass — then goes back to pruning. When a nursery owner mentions slow sales, George buys one of everything. When someone offers 800 types of maple trees, he takes them all. His wife Olivia remembers him saying, “It’s not my garden, Liv.” He saw himself as a caretaker. The garden didn’t belong to him — he belonged to it. By 1980, he publishes his autobiography and dedicates it “to gardeners everywhere.” He writes that he’s simple. He doesn’t want the business full-time. He’s a gardener. He plants flowers and watches them grow. Journalists visit and call it un-rock-star-like. George doesn’t mind. He’s lived Beatlemania, stadium screams, cultural revolutions. Compared to restoring hedges, it felt empty. After John Lennon’s murder, the gates close for good. George and Olivia keep working — not for visitors, but for the work itself. He dies in 2001. Today, the gardens are considered masterpieces of Victorian landscaping. Olivia still tends them. The estate remains private. George Harrison chose dirt under his fingernails over applause. And in that choice, he found something stadiums never gave him. Freedom.

This is so true.
At 67, here's one piece of advice I'd give anyone under 30: Travel as much as you can while you're young. 🌍 You don't need to be rich. Fly economy. Stay in hostels. Take overnight trains. Backpack across borders. Sleep on a friend's couch. Eat street food. Get lost in places where nobody speaks your language. Leave your comfort zone and experience the world beyond the one you've always known. Dance with locals. Try unfamiliar foods. Listen to cathedral bells echo through ancient streets and hear the call to prayer drift across a crowded city. Walk through little alleyways, share meals with strangers, and make friends with people whose lives look nothing like yours. Learn how other cultures think, love, work, celebrate, and survive. Discover that people can speak different languages, follow different traditions, and believe different things while still sharing the same hopes, fears, and dreams. The world is much bigger than your hometown, your social circle, or what you see on a screen. Travel won't just give you beautiful photographs and unforgettable stories. It'll challenge your assumptions, humble you, broaden your perspective, and teach you to appreciate things you once took for granted. Don't spend your entire youth waiting until you have more money, a better job, or the perfect time. You can always earn more money, but you can't buy back the years you spent being afraid to explore. Go see the world. Meet its people. Embrace its differences. And when you return home, bring back more than souvenirs. Bring back a wider perspective, a more open heart, and a deeper understanding of humanity. The best thing travel can give you isn't a passport full of stamps. It's a mind that has expanded and a heart that has learned to see the world differently. ❤️🌎
