Cell cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092…

Three varieties, three different characteristics, but one common goal! Delivering quality and constancy for growers. Pictured here are Butterfly, Carrington and Reacher, showing the diversity within green pea genetics. It's a great reminder that variety choice matters. #Peaseed

The British farming industry is in crisis. And shame on the successive governments who let this happen. National food security is one of the foundations of a strong society. Because ultimately, no farmers, no food. Support British farmers. Our food security depends on them. 🚜

Interesting article on the implications of advances in breeding technology and the commercialisation of resultant new varieties. How to commercially reward the breeder introducing a useful characteristic into an already registered variety and the original breeder of that variety?
As genome editing advances, who owns the value of an improved variety? Marcel Bruins explores Essentially Derived Varieties and why plant breeders’ rights matter. #SeedSector2045 #PlantBreeding hubs.li/Q04C4PPL0

The winter wheat disease nursery has established nicely here in East Cork. Approximately 2500 new wheat lines are being compared for their resistance to disease, primarily Septoria tritici 🌾

Although “Beowulf” has been traditionally interpreted as meaning “bee-wolf” (a kenning for bears) or beado-wulf (“war-wolf”), philologists & mythologists suggest Beowulf’s name (& early lineage) may draw from the Anglo-Saxon barley god, Beowa…
Scholars have also compared Beowa to Byggvir, the grain/barley servant of the norse god Freyr in the Prose Edda, as both names are directly linked to words for barley (“bygg” in old norse)

Great initiative from @niabgroup and just what @BBSRC should be funding. Mobilising useful traits from unadapted germplasm has been underfunded for far too long. Ideally, a long term publicly funded programme is needed to really benefit agriculture.
Niab will lead a new international wheat pre-breeding project to move promising genetic traits into elite European wheat lines, working with commercial breeders to accelerate variety development. #WheatBreeding #PlantBreeding hubs.li/Q04B3lbM0
