New paper in @AIBSbiology BioScience! Identifications are keeping pace with millions of observations added to @iNaturalist, and a small subset of highly active, taxonomically specialized users provide most of the identifications on the site.
academic.oup.com/bioscience/…

ALT Area plots show that users on iNaturalist are 50/50 taxonomic specialists and generalists, with 65% being geographic specialists and 35% being geographic generalists. However, the vast majority of identifications (96%) come from taxonomic specialists, with about half of those being geographic generalist and half geographic specialist.

Young bats are taking their first flights! These often end up in crash landings. If you see bats roosting in odd places or even on the ground - this may not be a cause for alarm! USE THICK GLOVES & move them out of harms way! #NoBareHandsPlease #JustALostTeenager
We highlight the amazing work of several types of active identifiers, and encourage everyone, especially those with taxonomic expertise, to volunteer some time to promote high-quality natural history data and join the #iNaturalist community!
This was a super fun and collaborative passion project with many amazing coauthors including @vijaybarve @carrieseltzer @joshua_doby @MikesMothModels @squirrelbert @robgural

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, recently returned to Midway Atoll!
The beloved Laysan albatross, or mōlī, is at least 71 years old. Biologists first identified and banded Wisdom in 1956 after she laid an egg, and the large seabirds aren’t known to breed before age 5.

The current 12-month salary for grad students at UF Biology is $27.3K (assuming they receive summer support at 0.5FTE). For all the grants I applied to over the last 5.5 years, I was told I had to budget the standard rate.

Florida Legal Services, on behalf of the @UnitedFacultyFL, asks @UF to reconsider its position and repeal the ban on demonstrations inside University buildings. If UF chooses not to do so, our organizations will consider legal action to ensure that free speech rights are upheld.

Dimming lights helps out bats too! We have migratory bats. #Hoary #Silver #Red (and we don't know if light affects our hibernating bats that also can move 100-500km over landscapes in the fall)...
Happy #WorldMigratoryBirdDay!
This year's theme focuses on #LightPollution
We can all take simple steps to #DimLightsForBirds in our neighbourhoods. Read & watch how you can here: ow.ly/QzaX50L2EuS
