🌾 Polish researchers undress the barley corn 🇪🇺 The European Parliament will vote this week on how New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) are regulated in plant breeding, and that's a big deal. As science-driven environmentalists, we at the Eco-Progressive Network are genuinely excited about what these tools can do for more sustainable farming and healthier food. So while everyone's looking at the topic, we want to show what's already possible. On our CRISPR Library we collect real scientific projects from across the EU and around the world, each using NGTs to improve crops in its own way. 🇵🇱 Today, we talk about a naked barley corn Domesticated barley varieties typically produce hulled grains in which the pericarp is inseparably attached to the caryopsis. This complicates processing and increases the energy and resource requirements at the mill. For this reason, barley is rarely used for human consumption, despite its excellent nutritional properties. Studies on "naked barley" have identified the responsible gene locus, nud. A research team from Poland has successfully modified this gene locus using CRISPR/Cas, so that the husks are easily separated from the grain during threshing. New varieties with naked grains could thus be processed directly, but their use is not yet permitted in the EU. To ensure that such innovations are put into practice, the EU needs science-based policies that enable the use of NGTs in agriculture. Right now anti-gene editing groups are lobbying MEPs to block crucial innovation that will make European agriculture more sustainable. Next week the European Parliament will make a final vote on legislation governing the use of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). Send a message that they should back innovation and modern sustainable agriculture. Sign our petition: act.weplanet.org/p/eu-suppor…

“If we want healthier conversations about food, we must start with sound science and its simple truth that crop protection is not the enemy of safe food but the reason we have it”- Per-Ola Olsson, a Swedish farmer. Read the full story: bit.ly/4nsmice #GFNMobilizing

"If you not are at the table, then instead you are on the menu " Primary farmers must by their own will and for own sake determine, what's good for their soil. Otherwise, others will do it for us!
“I was doing it before I knew what to call it.” @BayKbs, like many farmers, adopted regenerative practices out of purpose, not pressure. Now he’s helping lead the movement. Learn more about his journey: bit.ly/40txlZf #GFNMobilizing #regenerativeagriculture

#RegenAg Not just another definition, but perhaps the first and only declaration on regenerative agriculture Written by and for the farmers themselves. Read it and do your thoughts. Then sign it, if you can see yourself being encompassed by its spirit change.org/p/let-farmers-lea…

“Regenerative agriculture begins with a principled commitment to soil conservation, but the specifics will vary based on local conditions and needs,” shares Sarah Singla, a farmer from Canet-de-Salars, France. Discover more here: bit.ly/450uTwo #GFNMobilizing

EU have realized that the new world order, requires a new approach to assure both military-, energy- and food security. Sadly that it had to be driven so far out, before we wook up. Let's hope that the new strategy work out.
"It is good news for all Europeans, delivering a renewed focus on securing staple energy and food supplies for an affordable price," explains GFN member Knud Bay-Smidt. Learn more here: bit.ly/3DgZbQ9 #GFNMobilizing

Have your say about the Red Tape and come up with suggestions on how to simplificy the CAP
Replying to @EUAgri
The Commission is looking at farmers’ views on: - difficulties with CAP and other rules - ease of access to #CAP funding - use of digital tools to record or report farm data - duplication of procedures Online survey until 8 April👇 europa.eu/!BGRMDg

A disappointment to realize that a small majority of the Danish politicians voted against investment in nuclear energy. Do we have a to strong @Vestas lobbyisme , in Denmark?
EU countries remain divided on nuclear energy Today, two coalitions of EU energy ministers met in Brussels and released their statements on their preferred energy technology. France, along with Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Sweden, released a joint statement stating, "This momentum must now be converted into a comprehensive and enabling European framework for nuclear development, exploring essential policies dimensions including financing." On the other side of the debate, energy ministers from Germany and Austria joined Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain against the investment in nuclear energy. They state, "Funding should focus on cost-efficient technologies where common targets exist." (The Netherlands signed both) To read the full statement from the Nuclear Alliance - presse.economie.gouv.fr/decl… usnews.com/news/world/articl…

I am, as a dane, positiv surprised and very happy to see this support. Nice if there is a paradigme shift in the public debate about the use of gene technologi broadly- incl GMO. The tool that has been in use elsewhere for 30 years now
The science is clear! It's time to say YES to #CRISPR and other #NGTs! 💚 Scientists from PLEN join the call from 37 Nobel laureates and over 1,500 scientists for MEPs to support new genomic techniques in the @Europarl_EN debate tomorrow!
