Tribalism
Is there still a practical relevance for asking who someone's Sabhuku is, when getting or replacing an ID? Or its just another remnant from the colonial era whose purpose was more for manipulation, segregation and curbing rural-to-urban migration than identification purposes?

I don’t think it serves a legitimate identification purpose, same as adding profession on a passport

Useless remnant from colonial era, white people didn't have headmen on their IDs, it was intended to instill tribalism amongst black people so as to divide them . As for me, the Sabhuku on my ID has been changed 3 times already!

Its very much relevant. If you were born in the city ask your parents or grand parents they know your village of origin. We are Africans and have our roots in the rural/communal areas. That identity is important regardless of how our colonisers used it.

Colonial authorities used chiefs to control African communities, imposed racial segregation by confining Africans to reserves, and enforced pass laws to restrict their movement into urban areas. It helped control African labour and limit permanent African settlement in cities

It's a national identity document. Knowing where and which village you come from is part of being able to identify you, nothing manipulative about it, don't overthink everything

That’s why we have no identity, people want to degrade everything uniquely African about us, relevant or not the village of origin is fine as is that’s our Zimbabwean id
