I went to Tbilisi for the wine. That was ten years ago. I came for the oldest wine culture on earth, the extraordinary tables, the rare and lovely blend of old world and new. I was still an evangelical then, and I looked at every thousand-year-old church on those ordinary street corners through borrowed eyes. Beauty, for the moment, was only beauty. But we kept going back, summer after summer, until the returning stopped feeling like travel and started feeling like homing. And slowly I began to see what I had been walking past: a whole people whose year was still ordered by the fasts and the feasts, whose long table, the supra, lifted its toasts to God and to the departed, who kept without arguing about it the very things the West had quietly let slip. I had spent my whole life inside the photographic negative of that. In Georgia, for the first time, I was standing in the photograph. I am beginning to write from that road twice a week at Beauty Went First. Free to read: beautywentfirst.substack.com

"What is America, if nothing else, except for a sea of nations. There are many things that could be said about our nation. Some say we're Babylon, and this is true. Some say we exported all of our licentiousness, our fornication, and our greed. This is true. But something that is also very true, is that, in America, [Orthodox] people have learned what it means to be Christian. And what I mean by that is, we do not have the undergirding of traditional culture. We do not have the undergirding of ancient language and ancient culture. We, as the Orthodox Church, Orthodox Christians here in America, we have one thing, one person, and that's Christ. This is our great strength. Our great strength is that we have nothing else to fall upon, except for Christ.... ... If there was no hope for us God would not have sent us so many Saints. And so now we must realize what's before us, and what's before us is to become fishers of men. Because something else that we as Americans have, that really no one else has, if we remember something, that this world is not our home. As Americans, this sea of nations, all of us come from a diaspora. Unless you're [Native American], you're from a diaspora. Whether you're Swiss, Ghanian, Pakistani, whatever you are, if you're here, you come from somewhere else, and you know more than anyone else, that this is your home... ...This is our home, this where we're called to sanctify... ... this is where God has called us to become Saints." - Father Turbo Qualls

People can say whatever they want. But the body of recognized American Orthodox Saints viewed and treated this continent as a place for missionary proclamation and the establishment of the Orthodox Church. They did not view it as an already adequately Christian society.

i’m typically brain rotted and low attention span but i read this whole piece and you made a very nuanced and clear explanation of your position and why you’re against the “growing” white nationalism. I love your vision for america it’s realistic and within the phronema☦️

America is not and has never been a Christian nation. There is nothing to defend or to save. At best, it is a land with some measure of decent people that needs to be evangelized. It is more akin to Rome, pre-Constantine.

Yesterday I posted that America is not and has never been a Christian nation, that there is nothing to defend or to save, and that it is more like Rome before Constantine. It caused a lot of backlash, and short posts left out most of what I believe. Here it is. First, what I want. I want America to be a Christian nation, in a fuller sense than most people mean by it. I want the faith established: honored by the public order as true, keeping the public calendar, and shaping the law. I want it Orthodox, because Orthodoxy is built to become the faith of a whole people, with a national church and a patriarch who can gather a nation into one mind, Church and state each in its own lane. The old name for that harmony is symphonia. Other faiths would be free: synagogues, mosques and Baptist churches keep their doors, property, schools and the full protection of the law, just not the public honor and support of establishment. A Christian public order also would not license what the Church calls sin: pride parades, abortions, degeneracy, etc. That is about the street, not anyone's worth. The man who would have marched in a pride parade keeps his dignity, his safety, his home, his work and his vote. He bears the image of God no less than I do, and the Church names my sins before his. When I say America is not a Christian nation, then, it is not because I don't want one. It is because I want the real thing. A Christian nation is not a country where most people tick "Christian" on a survey. It is a baptized people gathered at one altar. Its year is kept by the Church's feasts, its children are raised at her font, and its rulers answer to a law older than their own. I have spent a decade going back and forth to a country like that, Georgia. The man it trusted most was the head of the Church, not a politician. When he took office under the Soviets there were a few dozen working churches left. When he died this year there were about two thousand parishes. He offered to be godfather to the third and later children of married Orthodox couples, and tens of thousands were baptized with him beside them. Nobody legislated any of it. The people came back to the churches first, and the law followed them. Now hold America up to that. It was founded with no national church on purpose. The Constitution never mentions God, bans religious tests for federal office, and forbids Congress to establish a religion. Today about 62 percent of Americans call themselves Christian, and only about a third go to church even once a month. On a given Sunday, roughly one American in a thousand is in an Orthodox liturgy. Our feasts are consumerism and our established morality is anything but Christian, and often it is anti-Christ. That is what I meant by nothing to defend or to save. I did not mean nothing good. There is real decency here, real freedom, and neighbors I love. I meant there is no Christian order under the surface waiting to be restored, because you cannot restore what was never built. America is a pagan nation with a veneer of Christianity, pagan in the old sense: many gods, no common altar. That is why I said Rome before Constantine. The early Church was a small minority in an empire full of gods. It did not take over the government. It preached, baptized, fed the poor and buried its martyrs, and Christian establishment came three centuries later. Tertullian told the persecutors, "the blood of Christians is seed." That is our work too. You cannot vote your way into holiness. A law can govern what a man does; it cannot make him love God. Holiness comes up from the people, and only when the people are actually Christian can politics change anything that lasts. Laying a Christian state over an unconverted people is not a Christian nation. It is brute force, and it fails. Which is where I part with the white nationalists. Their Christian America is a restoration project, a white Christian country that supposedly existed and must be taken back. It is wrong about the history: that country was Protestant where it was Christian at all, and several of its states barred from office anyone who would not profess the Protestant faith. It is wrong about the Church. A white Orthodox America is not a stricter Orthodoxy. It is a schism. It also fails as a mission. About seven in ten Orthodox Christians in this country were born abroad or have a parent who was. Most of our laymen, deacons, priests, bishops would not be considered "white" under their version the State, meaning they don't even consider them Americans. In the last census, fewer than half of American children were non-Hispanic white. If America ever becomes Orthodox, it will be through the very people that vision tells to leave. I also wrote that the loudest voices about bloodline are mostly single and childless. I put a number on something I cannot count, and I take it back. The point stands: talk about "my people" costs nothing. A household, a parish and a neighbor brought to the Liturgy cost everything. For America to become Orthodox means baptizing all of America: the descendants of the founders and of the people they enslaved, Mexican and Korean and Ethiopian and Appalachian, old families and new arrivals alike. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them." America is not a Christian nation to be saved. It is a mission field, and we are a tiny minority who need to act like one. It does not need restoring. It needs the font. In Acts, an Ethiopian official asked Philip, "See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?" Nobody asked about his ancestry. They went down into the water together.

Seeing white nationalists inevitably treat Brother Augustine as not white enough, not American enough, and not Orthodox enough was an inevitability within far-right Orthodox circles. Chickens coming home to roost with this ideology infiltrating the Church.
Jews are horribly miscegenated. They have no actual nationality because they have no real home. This is why they will try to subvert Orthodoxy to make it multicultural and globalistic instead of nationalistic like it has always been.

No clear evidence exists of a plethora of Orthodox saints explicitly calling the United States a Christian nation. St. Nikolai Velimirovich described America as “a wonderful God’s country” and noted what every Christian country needs, but stopped short of that phrase. Saints like St. Tikhon, St. Innocent, and St. John of Shanghai treated America primarily as a mission field for Orthodoxy rather than an already Christian nation in the Orthodox sense.

Washington, Franklin, Hancock, Revere, Monroe, and Livingston were all Free Masons. Trying to treat your founding fathers as one monolithic block with no discernable ideological or theological differences - deist influence - is historically myopic and sloppy.

So ecumenism is cool as long as you get to LARP as starting this country? “Thomas Jefferson’s tutor was orthodox!” bro….🗿

Apparently when you start chopping down the idol of America, everyone becomes an ecumenist and whatever we have here as the majority “faith” is true Christianity.

You must be a kid. There's no interpretation and nothing communist about the Bible. Its plain letter of the word. Perhaps you'd be wise if you actually read it. I am Orthodox Christian. I don't hate Christendom. I am Christendom. And I don't hate America. I believe America should remain majority White as a nation. What I don’t believe: - America should be white only - Racial Idolatry - Prioritizing and Worshipping skin color If that's what you want then you too need to return to your ancestral homeland, Europe so that all things are set right for everyone, not just you. You don't get a special exception. There is no divine mandate from God to give you any entitlement. There is absolutely no room for racial hatered in Christ Jesus.

I’m honestly incredibly tired of people saying “Well Saint so-and-so said XYZ about a topic, so that makes it de facto truth”

The people who are always clamoring about: - honoring my ancestors - defending my bloodline - saving my people - having a white nation Are single and/or childless about 90% of the time. They have zero skin in the game, build nothing, contribute nothing to the expansion of white people, yet act like their ancestors wouldn’t think they were literally a loser.

The Zionist evangelicals who worship Israel will tell you that this is Judaism, and that these are God’s chosen people, even though none of this is the faith of the Old Testament… And in the same breath will say Orthodoxy is false because it isn’t “Biblical”, even though our faith is in completely continuity.
Satmar Grand Rebbe Aron danced the mitzvah tantz last night at the wedding of his grandson, Rabbi Joel Dushinsky, who married Rivka Rachel Singer, who hails from the Alexander Chasidic dynasty, the groom is also a grandson of the Dushinsky Rebbe of Jerusalem who attended the wedding. The wedding celebration was held at the Main Satmar Shul on Kent Avenue and Hooper Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
