New evidence in long-running debate about whether free-to-read research articles have increased reach.

Our @COKIproject article 'Open access research outputs receive more diverse citations' has been published in @Scientometrics
Summary: OA = greater diversity* in researchers citing the research. *countries, regions & disciplines.

Excited with the amount of interest shown for this preprint and am eager to hear feedbacks.
Just to add, in support of open data and reproducibility, we have also made the full data process transparent through GitHub and Zenodo: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.70811…
One of the challenges with proving the benefits of #openaccess at scale has been getting global evidence that more people access and use OA content.
My @COKIproject colleague @CK_Karl_Huang has just released a preprint that may answer that question:

Karl asked the question, not is #openaccess associated with more citations, but is it associated with more *diverse* citations.
The answer is yes, and it seems pretty robust. We think this is pretty solid evidence in support of the basic claim of OA. More people access it.
A concerning article on penguins and climate change: "Half of all living penguin species are endangered or vulnerable, and the scientists say their slow evolutionary rates and niche lifestyles could send penguins towards a dead end."

A group of STEMM researchers, including Zoos Victoria’s @drmparrott, have examined the impact of single-use plastic pollution on marine environments, post-pandemic. There are simple things you can do that can help slow this down. Read their findings here: bit.ly/3OEQazT

A cure is possible. The researchers are calling for urgent global, measurable & time-bound reduction & elimination targets for plastic pollution, & a global effort similar to the Antarctic Treaty.

Protecting ourselves from #COVID19 infection has exacerbated single-use plastic pollution, led to a global plastic crisis & a major threat facing humans & wildlife, 8 #TeamHB4 and #TeamHB5 researchers have found. 🧵

Masks & gloves disposed during COVID19 have led to a global plastic crisis - threatening humans, environment & wildlife. Seeing plastics in Antarctica prompted a group of #WomenInScience to write a paper showing that a global solution is possible, similar to the Antarctic Treaty

Today we toured the DUG super computer facilities in Perth. The computer processors are sunk into vats of what looked like water but which was actually … baby oil! We were able to dip our fingers into it, and see many cables and the banks and banks of processors under the liquid
