Enjoyed this Richard Holmes talk about the romance history of Balloons: our first instances of flight. The story of the family escaping East Germany via a makeshift balloon is particularly arresting. youtu.be/m5UvMephFdY youtu.be/m5UvMephFdY

Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist, once went through the major U.S. government departments and said which ones should stay and which should go: • Department of Agriculture: Abolish • Department of Commerce: Abolish • Department of Defense: Keep • Department of Education: Abolish • Department of Energy: Abolish (move the nuclear/military piece under Defense) • Department of Health and Human Services: Cut in half (limited public health role only) • Department of Housing and Urban Development: Abolish • Department of the Interior: Sell off most government land, and abolish • Department of Justice: Keep • Department of Labor: Abolish • Department of State: Keep • Department of Transportation: Abolish • Department of Treasury: Keep (to collect taxes) • Department of Veterans Affairs: Pay veterans off, and abolish Result: roughly 14 departments down to about 4–5. Government’s real jobs, he said: defend the country, keep the peace, and protect people from being coerced by others. Everything else is outside its proper role.

It shouldn’t be possible to stop a development by protest. That’s the whole point of private property. If Lidl bought the land or rented it then they should do what they want. They’ll either be correct that people want it or they’ll lose money and leave. People will protest literally anything

NEW - Adolf Hitler's Alpine retreat, the Eagle's Nest, was completely destroyed after a potential arson attack last night in Bavaria's Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Not even mad, just disappointed. Very common mindset on these Isles. What could you possibly say to these people to convince them otherwise?

If only someone like @DouglasKMurray had written a best-selling book in 2017 warning European elites what would happen unless they changed their policies.
🇫🇷🔥 Limoges city hall set on fire by rioters at the end of the Oct. 17 protest; the bell tower collapsed and the prefect says the building is "largely lost" Rioters attacked Limoges' hôtel de ville late Saturday afternoon after the Oct. 17 cost-of-living march, breaking windows and setting fire to the ground floor; cars were also burned outside. Firefighters arrived shortly after 6 p.m., and the flames reached the roof around 7 p.m. and were still burning at 8:10 p.m. The 43-meter bell tower collapsed. Prefect Maurice Barate said the roof fell onto the lower floors except in the west wing and two-thirds of the facade had disappeared, calling the building "largely lost," a "heritage catastrophe" and a "deliberate act" by rioters. The 19th-century building, opened in 1883 and inspired by Paris's city hall, is a listed monument. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the fire; Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said "we will not be intimidated." Earlier in Limoges, fireworks mortars were fired at police near the A20 interchange, a police vehicle was burned and shops were looted. Reported by AFP, franceinfo, Europe 1 and Flash FM. NOT CONFIRMED: Which artworks and decorations inside have been destroyed. Claims that works by Henri-Paul Motte, Jean-Joseph Weerts and Urbain Bourgeois are definitively lost have not been confirmed by officials, and no inventory has been published. I also found no figure on injuries or arrests in Limoges. Saturday's national mobilization against the cost of living drew a very large turnout, with CNews reporting more than 550,000 demonstrators, while violence was concentrated in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Limoges, including a brief break-in at Marseille's city hall. The loss of a historic city hall turns a day of mostly peaceful marches into a symbolic national event and will dominate the political response. What to watch: the official damage and heritage assessment once the fire is out, arrests and charges for arson, the government's response including any new security measures, and whether the unions and student groups distance themselves from the violence. Sources: AFP; franceinfo / France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine; Europe 1; CNews; Flash FM; Haute-Vienne prefecture; Interior Ministry.

The battle of narratives is going strong. Our countries are a recurring target. It is time to act to tell the stories that make us strong. Let’s live our own story! Protect what matters - our democracy.

The West, or perhaps only the Anglosphere, is the historically unique idea that individuals exist not for the sake of their ruler, their class, their society, their ancestors, their gods, or any other such superstition, but for their own sake.

It should be paid for voluntarily like everything else. Many brits would instantly pay for it by choice, and a funding model like this would pressure the BBC to concentrate its efforts on what it does best.
