The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past remains in development. Despite recent reports suggesting the film had been put on hold following the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, Deadline’s latest report of Warner Bros. upcoming projects lists the film as still being in early development. Stephen Colbert remains attached to write the screenplay alongside his son, Peter McGee, and original Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens. The story will revisit six chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from Peter Jackson’s trilogy, including material involving Tom Bombadil and the Barrow-downs.
