The richer you are, the more you can borrow. The Swiss know how to utilize the debt-based fiat system.
Switzerland tops the debt-per-person charts at ~$342k, but that number is almost entirely private: household mortgages and corporate borrowing. Government debt is tiny.
The catch is the tax system. Interest is deductible, so a lot of people keep the mortgage forever instead of paying it down. Property is expensive, credit is cheap, and the assets on the other side are huge.
Average net wealth per adult is still ~$910k, #1 in the world. The gross debt figure looks dramatic until you look at the balance sheet...
