Daniel, you’ve repeatedly highlighted one of the hardest problems in AI: What happens when we build systems smarter than us, but cannot reliably verify what they are actually optimizing for? This isn’t just a capability or alignment problem. It’s a trust problem. Today, AI safety focuses heavily on alignment: Can we make AI want what humans want? But even if alignment improves, another question remains: If we cannot perfectly inspect or verify an AI’s internal goals, how does society safely interact with it at scale? Human civilization solved a similar problem long ago. We can’t read minds. We can’t know anyone’s true intentions. Yet society functions because we built layers of trust: 1.Persistent identity 2.Verifiable history 3.Accumulated reputation 4.Accountability mechanisms A doctor or a company isn’t trusted because of their words alone — they’re trusted because of their track record. Future autonomous AI agents will do far more than answer questions. They will manage assets, negotiate contracts, run businesses, coordinate with other agents, and make decisions over years. At that point, the relevant question shifts from “Is this AI smart?” to “Why should anyone trust this AI?” Current AI systems have a fundamental social deficit: They can appear anywhere, be copied instantly, restarted with a new name, and carry zero cost for past misbehavior. From society’s perspective, they are intelligent strangers with no persistent identity or reputation. This is where Bitcoin offers something powerful — not as money, but as a global, immutable time and history layer. A neutral substrate where something can have an origin, a timestamp, and an accumulating record. Bitmap explores exactly this idea: AI agents may need an existential coordinate — a place where their journey begins, where reputation can accumulate over time, and where actions become verifiable history.
