We hooked a simulated fruit fly brain up to a live blackjack table and let it play for 36 hours.
It learned to count cards. Nobody told it to.
It's up $400.
Setup: full simulation of the fly's nervous system, 139,255 neurons, 1 ms per step, wired directly to the game.
Only input is the video feed from the table. Only feedback is +1 for a win, −1 for a loss, fed into the brain's dopamine neurons.
No strategy chart, no card values, no concept of 21.
Hours 0–6: chaos, ~28% win rate.
Hours 6–20: converges on basic strategy on its own.
Hours 20–36: win rate keeps climbing past what basic strategy allows.
We assumed a bug.
Not a bug.
A cluster of ~40 neurons in the fly's memory centre builds up activity as cards come out and resets when the deck is shuffled. Compared against the real cards being dealt, it tracks a Hi-Lo running count at 91% correlation.
Low cards push it up, tens and aces pull it down.
The fly reinvented card counting from nothing but win/loss feedback.
Caveats: one run, no ablation tests yet, and the "count" is our interpretation of the readout. Could just be memorising dealer patterns.
