Coton Orchard

Huge thanks to @BlueBarrelCider, @TreesAreGoodCIC + @CotonBuzz for all they do for nature, for communities locally and beyond. Weβll be raising a glass tonight to everyone whoβs stood up to help #SaveCotonOrchard. Whatever the election brings β cheers, and onward ππΊ #CiderWeek

π @BlueBarrelCider named their sweet, still cider βCuckoo Returnsβ for the bird that called as it was ready. Last year, Cotonβs Bramley trees fed the blend. Tonight, the cuckoo sang the yearβs first call. Raise a glass, sing WasailβοΈ Help #SaveCotonOrchard #NationalCiderWeek πΊ

Amidst the GCPβs half-a-billion-pound bonkers busway bonanzaβbulldozed figuratively now, literally laterβitβs nice to have some good news. Ems & Leo of @BlueBarrelCider and @TreesAreGoodCIC have been quietly cracking on, helping neighbours, communities, and nature alike. Their latest effort? Teaming up with Coton Orchard to rescue heritage fruit, revive the craft of cider-making, and fund the fight to #SaveCotonOrchard. Their ciders, Cuckooβs Return and East to Eden Origins Series, donβt just taste goodβthey do good. Raise a glass, raise awareness, and enjoy a sip to save England's Eden, Cheers! : youtu.be/AErPSHAN_Qw?si=2CT7β¦

A frosty aerial view of Coton Orchard & @MadingleyHill reveals the true scale of whatβs at risk. Without leaves, itβs clear how many trees there are and how tall they stand, dwarfing buildings. With a TPO granted for the ancient Bramleys, weβve won a battle, but the fight goes on

The council boasts of planting 500 trees since 2019βmaple, alder, birch, cherry, oak, etc. Yet in Coton Parish, weβve planted 1,680+ Woodland trees, plus 100+ fruit trees in 2 years. These saplings canβt replace the 40β100-year-old trees and hedgerows theyβre supporting felling.

Today, we joined @CotonBuzz to plant a sapling cultivated from the tree of Barrie Juniperβa renowned British plant scientist and Oxford professorβgrown from seeds he collected in Tian Shan, the βHeavenly Mountainsβ spanning Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Chinaβs Xinjiang province, where the wild ancestors of all apples are found. We marked the occasion with a glass from the first of three bottles in the limited βOriginsβ series: Dry, Medium, and Sweet ciders, created by @BlueBarrelCider and Coton Orchard to support the #SaveCotonOrchard campaign. Each label showcases a segment of an illustration by Cambridge researcher NaΓ― Zakharia, inspired by these ancient landscapes. East to Edenβa tribute to the appleβs journey from Central Asia to Englandβs orchards. Cambridge residents can find this exclusive bottling at the @MillRoadFair, Saturday 7th December. Cheers π»
