TELFORD RAPE GANG SCANDAL. POLICE PROMISED TO PROTECT CHILDREN. FOUR YEARS AFTER THE INQUIRY, THEIR SPECIALIST TEAM WAS REPORTED TO BE OPERATING AT JUST 29% CAPACITY. TWENTY RECORDED OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN, INCLUDING FOUR RAPES. NOT ONE CHARGE. THE MEN RESPONSIBLE HAD STILL NOT BEEN BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. Telford's own inquiry exposed decades of institutional failure. Tom Crowther KC accepted that an estimate of up to 1,000 children sexually exploited was reasonable. Police and social workers had failed vulnerable girls, warnings had been ignored, and concerns about race had discouraged investigations. THE VERDICT WAS DEVASTATING. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PROMISES MADE AFTERWARDS? In December 2023, West Mercia Police formally promised to maintain its specialist child exploitation team until July 2027. Crowther accepted that commitment in 2024. The force also promised further training. Now the council leader is questioning whether those promises have been honoured. TWO POLITICIANS HAVE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER. On 22 September 2016, Labour council leader Shaun Davies and Conservative Police Commissioner John Campion signed a letter to the Home Secretary declaring that a further inquiry was not necessary. Davies subsequently commissioned an inquiry that had no power to compel witnesses. He is now a Labour MP and Government Whip. On 14 July 2026, Campion dismissed his successor's concerns about police performance as "cheap political nonsense". If these men were so confident that another inquiry was unnecessary, why are serious questions about the protection of Telford's children still being asked ten years later? AND TELFORD TODAY. The council's 2026 report records 64 children receiving specialist support over concerns about sexual exploitation. Eighteen newly referred children were assessed as having already been exploited. Twenty recorded offences produced no charges by the time of the report. The police's promised training programme had reached only 30% rollout. The council leader reported that the specialist policing team was operating at approximately 29% capacity. And Anne Longfield has not selected Telford for a dedicated investigation under the new National Statutory Inquiry.
