Essay incoming, but the biggest problem in NBA 2K25 is the builder and not enough people are talking about it. People ask me all the time what I want in 2K26, and at first, I didn’t even know how to answer because on paper, we got a lot of what we asked for. We got the 99 rebirth system so we don’t have to grind badges. We got creative new takeovers. We even got a solid rep system. But something still feels off, and I’ve finally figured out why. It’s the builder. This started in 2K24 when 2K quietly changed how the builder works. They took away real customization. The builder gives the appearance of freedom, but it actually locks you into preset paths by tying badges directly to attribute ratings. That one shift quietly killed build diversity and creativity. In older 2Ks, the magic came from creating unique combinations. You could have a Two-Way Slashing Playmaker with a 73 three-pointer and still equip gold shooting badges like Catch and Shoot, Hot Zone Hunter, and Range Extender. That build could defend, finish, playmake, and still shoot. Now, those same badges require a rating in the high 80s or 90s, forcing players to sacrifice other parts of their game just to shoot. The jump shot creator system makes it worse. You’re locked out of animations unless you hit specific attribute thresholds. In older systems, if you had the right badges and knew your timing, you could green with a 73 three. You were rewarded for basketball IQ, not just raw stats. It even affects big men. The badge system makes it nearly impossible to create a viable stretch big or popper. You're forced into being an inside center because low 3-point ratings can't unlock crucial shooting badges, and raising your 3-pointer means sacrificing wingspan and rebounding, a brutal trade-off that doesn't reflect today's versatile NBA centers.​​ That balance is gone. In past games, a 90+ three-pointer gave you range and the ability to hit contested shots, but lower-rated builds could still be dangerous if they took smart shots. Now, if your guard doesn’t have a 99 three or mid, they’re borderline useless. It doesn’t matter how well you move or how open you get. If your rating isn’t high enough, you miss. Iso playstyles have been crushed. Getting open used to be the skill. Now it’s just about stacking ratings. And the worst part? This doesn’t reflect real basketball. In real life, not every good shooter has a 99 rating. Some players knock down shots in rhythm or when left wide open. Their success comes from situations, not raw ability alone. The old badge system captured that. You could build around being a situational shooter, a role player, or an all-around threat. Now everyone’s forced into the same mold. Some people say this system creates balance by preventing overpowered builds. But it’s done the opposite. Everyone is running the same meta builds with maxed-out shooting. Creativity is gone. You can’t make trade-offs or specialize. You just chase the highest stats. The fix is simple. Let us choose our own badges again. Give us back the freedom to create unique builds that reflect how we want to play. That one change would bring back diversity, revive iso play, and make 2K feel like the basketball we loved again.
