Incredible win by the Stangs tonight!
Biggest takeaways:
1. SMU dominated on the ground. This was somewhat surprising given how dominant Virginia Techâs defensive front has been all year. 6.1 YPC is outstanding. Multiple backs contributed, and SMU did a great job getting outside and attacking the edges.
2. Rhett did a great job tonight. He kept things simple and stuck with a balanced attack through the air and on the ground. I know I can harp on Rhett, but Iâm always willing to give him his flowers when he calls a good game.
3. We scored on our first possession. Itâs always been part of Rhettâs style to take the ball first. This year, though, itâs felt like a bit of a thorn in our side, with too many slow starts that put us behind the eight ball. Tonight, we took the ball, marched right down the field, scored, and never lost the lead. That was a huge key to the game.
4. The SMU defense forced a turnover. This hasnât been a strength of this yearâs team, but tonightâs timely fumble recovery, which led to a 20-7 lead, helped take the life out of the Hokies.
5. Kevin Jennings played great. He controlled the passing game, and if it werenât for a tipped-pass interception with the game already out of reach, this would have been his fifth straight game without an interception.
SMU fans, give me your thoughts on the game. What will you be looking for heading into a huge game next weekend?
Well, SMU fans, thereâs been a lot of gloom over the past week. But contrary to how we may all be feeling about this team right now, we still have a lot in front of us.
Win out in conference play, and a trip to Charlotte is still very much a possibility.
That said, this team hasnât given us a whole lot of reason for optimism heading into a tough stretch of games. But it starts tonight. Letâs go beat Va Tech and then stack a few wins.
What are your thoughts heading into tonight, Mustang fans?
Coming off a game in which he took 6 sacks, all eyes will be on Kevin Jennings' ability to counter Virginia Tech's ferocious defensive line Friday night.
The Hokies rank 2nd nationally in havoc rate, 6th in sacks, 1st in tackles for loss, and 1st in stuff rate. They're also allowing just 3.0 yards per carry.
Their ability to create negative plays and put offenses behind the chains does not bode well for an SMU offense coming off a game against Syracuse in which its average 3rd down distance was 10+ yards.
Especially with Virginia Tech coming off a bye while SMU is playing on short rest, the Hokies' defensive line should have some extra juice getting after Kevin.
SMU fans, how confident are you in the Mustangs' ability to bounce back at home?
SMU averaged over 12 turnovers per game last year, resulting in a negative turnover margin. NOT GOOD.
One of the biggest keys for this SMU basketball team will be cutting down on turnovers, especially in ACC play.
Last night, SMU turned the ball over 21 times. You can get away with that against Southern, but this will be a long year if we canât take care of the ball.
Offensively, it doesnât look like we have a âguyâ right now. Someone who can just go out and get a bucket when you need it. I hope that changes. Obviously, itâs only one game into the season, so the verdict is still out.
I was pleased to see how efficient we were with the shots we did put up, though. We shot it at a 51/41/80 clip. Hopefully, we can continue that throughout the season.
1 game into the season and this SMU MBB team is worse then anyone could have imagined. It is going to be a long season for Coach Enfield⌠and hopefully his last.
BREAKING: SMU Head Coach Rhett Lashee to step down as playcaller. Top 3 donor Bill Armstrong will take over play calling duties, with a first of its kind Coach Comm system installed in his Epoch Wine Bar. @ToddFromTheVoid reports.
Anything to distract from the poor product on the field.

This is now SMUâs 10th 11 a.m. conference game in the last two seasons, by far the most in the ACC.
Letâs look at how other teams with comparable success have fared:
Louisville: 3 games
Virginia: 3 games
Sewer-dweller Florida State: 2 games
Glad to see the ACC continues to suck up to garbage programs like FSU and Clemson to beg them not to leave for the SEC, rather than promote its premier programs (the SEC doesnât want them anyways).
This stat is truly unbelievable
SMU had 12 offensive drives yesterday vs Syracuse
Drives with 2+ handoffs: 4
Drives with <2 handoffs: 8
SMU scoring on drives with 2+ handoffs: 4/4
SMU scoring on drives with <2 handoffs: 0/8
100% vs 0% on just handing the ball off 2 times a drive.
This is why we say Rhett needs to give up playcalling, the problem is so painfully obvious

#smu football needs to look at Urban Meyer to get to the next level. I appreciate what Lashlee has done for the program, and getting it in a position to have a meaningful conversation with top tier coaches, but the next level is simply beyond Lashleeâs current capabilities.
This is the nail in the coffin.
Rhett is not the man to lead this program into the future.
I appreciate him bringing us back to relevance and getting us to this point, but he has reached his ceiling.
He is just not a serious coach, and has shown he is not willing to adjust or develop to become a serious coach.
Shout out Rhett Lashlee for not calling timeouts and not giving the offense a chance to get the ball back. Excellent game management.
The game is over.
Kevin makes his typical gluttony of mistakes.
Rhett once again refuses to run the ball in the first half.
But this time the defense isnât able to bail him out and keep it close.
Wish this was surprising but it is the same story every week, SMU has played 1 good half of football all season.
Kevin and Rhett dressed up as clowns for Halloween, except it isnât a costume they wear it every day.
