May 5, 1945. The US Army retreats down a 400 foot cliff in Okinawa, leaving one unarmed medic behind. For the next 12 hours, he lowered 75 wounded men down that cliff alone with a single rope. His name was Desmond Doss. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, the 26 year old enlisted as a combat medic but refused to touch a gun. Men in his own unit mocked him, threw boots at him while he prayed, and tried to kick him out. He refused to leave. On the Maeda Escarpment in Okinawa, known as Hacksaw Ridge, heavy artillery drove his battalion down the cargo net. Everyone scrambled to safety except Doss. He stayed alone in the dark. Under constant fire, the skinny medic crawled into the smoke, dragged bleeding soldiers to the cliff edge, and tied a double bowline knot. Every time he lowered a man safely, he whispered the same prayer: "Lord, please help me get one more." Doss received the Medal of Honor and lived to age 87, passing away in 2006. He never carried a weapon in Okinawa, yet 75 men came home because he refused to stop at 74.
