Elgar seems to have moved in crypto-“nazi” filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s father (and his son?) in that way. Nolan has said that Elgar’s “Nimrod” (Variation IX from Elgar’s ENIGMA VARIATIONS])—which is heard in the film score to DUNKIRK—was “one of my father’s favorite pieces of music.” “I just find it unbearably moving,” son Nolan has said. Indeed, the director “was quoted as saying he can’t hear ENIGMA VARIATIONS—particularly ‘Nimrod’ —without feeling the weight of his father’s coffin on his shoulder.” I suspect that the name of Nolan’s production company—Syncopy—“a play on syncopation and [which] was suggested to Nolan by his late father, who was a classical music fan”—may be alluding to the syncopations in Elgar’s ENIGMA VARIATIONS. In Nolan’s films, too, “a larger theme ‘goes,’ but is not played.”
