The dilemma at the heart of psychotherapy is whether the patient will come to understand and rework their dysfunctional relationship patterns, or simply repeat them with a new person.
A common pattern is the patient who repeatedly occupies the role of aggrieved, wounded victim and seeks others to play the role of rescuer.
Some therapists are eager to take up the rescuer role because it fits their self-image as a caring ally. Enacting this relationship dynamic takes the place of helping the patient to recognize and understand the pattern and the high cost it brings.
The therapist may feel good about playing the role, but doing so dooms the patient to continue repeating the dysfunctional pattern in their life without insight or understanding.
In some cases, patients are receptive to examining their patterns and it is the therapist who is invested in perpetuating them.
The therapist becomes part of the problem instead of the solution.
