There's one thing I don't get about this stuff that just won a Forward prize. I get why people like it - it's passably amusing stand-up - & why he likes doing it, he's fun on stage. He seems likable too. But why insist it's poetry when it clearly isn't? youtu.be/vK4wYhvTJXI?is=AaLv…

Why co-opt a concept then say you're stylistically rebelling against gatekeepers? The institutions have even given up so this stuff now is the gatekeeper. What on Earth is the point? Why did stand-up (& trauma diarying elsewhere) decide to steal the word poetry?

Equally, why do they then constantly attack actual poetry for being bahhd elitism. It's like wandering into a film set and just recording aardvarks, insisting it's an action movie, that all action is aardvarks, and yelling at anyone who wants a bit of Arnie or Sly Stallone.

One thing on the strikes in Ireland, I'd personally meet their demands on pay, but with the condition that it becomes much easier to fire underperforming state employees. Better pay, but you get the same protection as a private sector worker.

Nothing, having gotten a lot of replies to a post about Carson, in which I was nonplussed by what I'd read, but curious if she had less glib, bland work, there are armies for and against her here, none of whom use their real names. Social media really needs to force real names.

I've never actually read Anne Carson, but I've dipped into about ten or twelve pieces now tonight, and... does it get better? Or is it all just glib aphorism with enjambment?

Your occasional reminder that without a 100% inheritance tax there can be no meritocracy, and no, you didn't get where you are on merit, but off the backs of thousands who loved you.

"We will have a financial incentive to make available and recommend products from third-party firms that pay fees for data analytics over those that do not," says Merrill Lynch, incentivizing itself to recommend third-parties. Latest for @RIABiz. riabiz.com/a/2026/9/29/merri… #RIA

The fact that 10% of the population voluntarily roleplays as a demented sock (tracksuits), at all times of the day, never ceases to amaze me. Perhaps this is the true lesson of Mother Hubbard.

As an actual Irish person, rather than what im guessing is someone of partly Irish descent, this is hilarious We do have excellent milk though, probably the best I've ever tried. She's also not drinking real milk, which goes bad in three days or so. Her fridge contains gallons.
And this apart of what inspired the milk thread

This woman is insane and needs barring from any developmental position for all time.
Replying to @NielsHoven
It's not developmentally appropriate for a child to learn individual letters at 2½ or 3, says Susan Neuman, a professor of childhood and literacy education at New York University (4/n)
