I remember back in the early and mid 90’s, any security or crypto talk you gave had to start with 5 or 10 minutes of justification for why security is an important problem or at least will be someday soon. And no one really believed it.

We know terrorists are bad. We know they depend on encryption. They also depend on gravity.
Asking mathematicians to "backdoor encryption for terrorists but make it safe for everyone else" is as dumb as demanding physicists do the same for gravity.
