So many otherwise trusted sites are posting deadly misinformation about bonfires, and hedgehogs who may be nesting under them.
PLEASE BE CLEAR:
❌Poking a broom or stick under the bonfire will do nothing - even if you actually hit the hiding hedgehog and hurt her, she will NOT run.
Hedgehogs DO NOT have the flight or fight reflex that humans and other animals have. Their response to threat and danger, and even pain, is to curl into a ball and stay put, and wait for the danger to pass.
❌A hiding hedgehog will NOT hiss, or make any sound at all! They are a prey animal, you are a predator - they will NOT alert a predator to their presence, they will stay silent.
❌Lighting the bonfire from one side will NOT WORK. Their response to danger is to STAY PUT AND CURL INTO A PROTECTIVE BALL. They won't come running out. As the heat comes closer and the smoke fills her lungs, a hiding hedgehog will just curl tighter.
Whoever wrote these 'tips' does not understand the nature of a hedgehog.
THEY DO NOT RUN FROM DANGER.
Broadcasting this total nonsense is spreading a false sense of security and is potentially extremely harmful.
The only safe bonfire is one that is built or moved ON THE DAY IT IS LIT.
Moving a bonfire takes less time than you'd think.
There are lots of late-born baby hedgehogs around right now, who would see a bonfire as a safe place to nest.
Regrets won't turn back the clock.
The 'If only' will haunt you for a lifetime.
If you have to have a bonfire, please make sure you do it right.

Freya’s dad and I felt truly heard as we shared the challenges we've encountered over the years in securing support for Freya, both at home and during her hospital stays during acute illnesses @NHSForthValley
Across Scotland, many children and young adults with severe and #complexhealth conditions are not receiving the appropriate support from adequately trained staff required to ensure their safety and well being. By providing a detailed account of our lived experiences, we hope to contribute to improved outcomes in patient safety for children like ours. @scotgov
Health Boards often neglect to acknowledge the extensive 24/7 medical care our children need at home, leaving parents and carers overwhelmed and drained. This challenge is echoed during acute hospital admissions, where the continuity of routine care for a child requiring constant assistance is frequently disrupted. This lack of support not only compromises safety but can also delay recovery from acute illnesses and, in some cases, lead to further health complications.
Freya’s Dad and I hope that by raising awareness of these critical issues, we can encourage meaningful changes in the way healthcare is delivered for vulnerable children across #Scotland.

Instead of welfare cuts, why not stop the £13,043,676 paid in MP's expenses. I'm sure this would help to balance the books. This is just for specific expenses. The total bill is £268,531,000 including staffing etc. I'm sure this could be pared down quite a bit if they tried.

32-year-old Ryan Dinnage, who was part of Nigel Farage’s security team, has been jailed for eight and a half years for raping a woman while she slept in a caravan.
He was charged in 2025, was still protecting Nigel Farage in April and May 2026, and was convicted in June.
