The dangers that law enforcement officers face each day are unimaginable. U.S. Attorney Stirling and the entire team at the U.S. Attorney's Office are thinking of the @ColumbiaPDSC as they mourn the loss of Officer DeLong, who was shot and killed in the line of duty today. May his loved ones, colleagues and the communities of Columbia and Kershaw County be comforted by his memory and legacy.
We're also praying for the swift recovery of another CPD officer who was shot and injured in the incident.

I have been meeting with the Director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections @BryanStirling and his team for years trying to get federal legislation that would jam cellphone signals in corrections institutions.
Cellphones in prisons are widely used by inmates to communicate with drug cartels, human traffickers and gun runners. Bryan and his team have made it real to me that cellphones in prisons aid and abet lawbreaking.
I completely support @SenTomCotton's legislation that would stop this practice. This needs to come to an end.

Lizak, a nine-year old Belgian Malinois who worked as a drug detection K-9 officer for SCDC’s Office of Inspector General, died from medical issues while on duty today. He was an excellent companion and a good boy. RIP 🐕 #WeAreCorrections

He understands the entire process—from preparing people for reentry at the start of their incarceration to ensuring they have the skills and support needed to succeed in society.” Congratulations, Director @GadsdenJake! #WeAreCorrections
I have appointed Jake Gadsden to serve as the next director of @SCDPPPSNews. The future of this department will be in good hands under his leadership, and I look forward to the positive impact he'll make as we work toward building a safer South Carolina.

Recently signed into law by Gov. @henrymcmaster, the legislation is named the “Captain Robert Johnson Act” in honor of Johnson, who was shot at his home in 2010 after inmates ordered a hit on him using a contraband cell phone.
