📣FREE EVENT | Middle Power Strategies: Turkey and India between the Great Powers
Middle power strategies in the context of renewed great power rivalry are drawing increasing scholarly attention. This event examines how Turkey and India, two consequential middle powers with distinct strategic traditions, are navigating great power competition. Both states maintain substantial ties with the West while deepening their engagement with Russia and China. Scholars have analysed these strategies through concepts such as strategic autonomy and multi-alignment, to capture how these states pursue room for manoeuvre.
The discussion will address several questions. How do middle powers formulate foreign policy strategies under conditions of great power rivalry? What do the Turkish and Indian cases reveal about the limits and possibilities of middle power positioning? And what international roles can middle powers play in an increasingly contested world?

This report summarises a high-level policy discussion convened by LSE IDEAS in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Embassy of Ukraine to the United Kingdom, held on 10 November 2025 at Lancaster House. Against the backdrop of the protracted war following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the discussion focused on the evolving security, trade, and political dynamics of the Black Sea region and explored policy instruments to support Ukraine and strengthen regional stability.
