Build American AI works to educate policymakers and the public on how pro-innovation policies can strengthen U.S. leadership, competitiveness, and trust in AI.

From the beginning, Build American AI has argued that America needs smart and balanced rules for artificial intelligence. That same principle applies to the infrastructure that powers AI. We can protect ratepayers, safeguard our natural resources, respect the right of communities to decide whether they want to welcome this investment, and still build the infrastructure America needs to lead the world in artificial intelligence. The continued build out of data centers and new energy infrastructure must benefit communities first and we will support leaders who advance policies that achieve that goal. States including Colorado, Georgia, and Texas, along with many others advanced by Governors across the political spectrum, are striking a strong and smart balance that should be replicated across the country.  Communities have legitimate questions about energy, water, land use, and costs. They deserve honest answers. We need moderate voices in the conversation to create and implement a transparent process with strong protections and real accountability. The stakes are too high to allow the loudest and most extreme voices to dictate America's future. Driving responsible investment away will cost Americans good-paying jobs, weaken communities and undermine America's ability to lead. Building the Future will support Republicans and Democrats who believe America can lead the world in AI while protecting families and empowering local communities. axios.com/2026/08/31/ai-advo…

In Ellendale, North Dakota, the data center is paying into the grid—and other customers receive a share as electricity-bill credits. KFYR’s March report put the benefit at about $70 a year.

The latest polling reported by @semafor confirms much of what we have been saying at @BuildAmericanAI: Americans want data centers built, but they want them built the right way. And the absolutist positions dominating so much of the political debate are increasingly out of touch with what voters actually think. The numbers tell an important story. Initially, 58% of voters oppose data center development in their state. But when companies are required to cover their own energy infrastructure costs, protect water resources, create jobs and deliver local economic benefits, support for development climbs to 64%. Even more telling, 78% support enforceable standards that protect ratepayers, communities and natural resources. And 58% say they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who supports those protections. This should be a wake-up call for candidates and policymakers who think the politically safe position is either unconditional support for development or blanket opposition to it. Both are potentially serious political traps. Americans are perfectly capable of being pro-growth, pro-innovation and pro-community at the same time, even if the social media chattering class seems incapable of understanding that. Families don’t want higher electricity bills. Communities want a meaningful voice in decisions affecting them. Voters expect developers to pay their fair share and protect local resources. They also understand the value of good-paying jobs, new investment, expanded economic opportunity and American leadership in AI. These positions are not contradictory. They are the foundation of a smart, durable approach to development. We need less absolutism and more serious policymaking. Strong, enforceable standards and continued investment are not competing objectives. They are how we get this right. That’s what we’ve been advocating at @BuildAmericanAI , and it’s where the evidence suggests a broad, bipartisan majority of Americans are. semafor.com/article/10/15/20…

Three out of every four Americans say they’d oppose a data center being built near them. Their biggest concerns: water usage and rising electricity bills. And, as our new video explains, the data on both of those issues … doesn’t match up with the anxiety.
