Judge Sutton's opinions are always a great read. These two paras from a 4th Amend case today—on why an officer's subjective belief that drugs were not present doesn't matter, and on how to evaluate claims of people being nervous—show his typical craft. opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinion… #N

Clonmel Courthouse, #Tipperary, where Thomas Francis Meagher & other Young Irelanders were tried after the 1848 Rebellion. The verdict delivered here set Meagher on a path that led to the battlefields of the American Civil War, and command of the Irish Brigade. #IrishDiaspora

The Royal Navy fleet in Berehaven, #Cork in 1802, including many ships that fought at the Nile and would fight at Trafalgar, e.g. HMS Temeraire (of Turner painting fame) at Number 4. Sailors of the Temeraire and other men from some of the fleet mutinied while anchored here.

Today being the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, on December 5, 1933, we pause to remember the particularly measured and balanced reaction of perhaps the greatest judge of the 20th century, Judge Learned Hand, to Prohibition's end:

Thrilled to see the @NewYorker give state constitutions the attention they deserve, in a great piece by @EyalPress. Can state supreme courts preserve - or expand - rights? Yes they can! newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…

The Italian state spent 7 years & €3m trying to prove NGOs saving migrants' lives aid & abet illegal immigration. Today, a Judge in Trapani threw the case out as "il fatto non sussiste". There is no case to answer. Even the prosecution agreed there was no evidence. Disgraceful.
