I spent a lot of my career thinking about data as it relates to place. And what makes a good/great place to live. There are reasons some places don't score well. But I hadn't simplified it to the fact that they are actively working to kill you.
I can't stop staring at this map.
There's a 20 year gap in life expectancy between deep red areas of the US, like the southeast, and blue areas like New England. Your lifespan in the US relates directly to where you live and how it's governed. latimes.com/business/story/2…
It's likely a good thing I'm not doing the @LivabilityMedia Top 100 Best Places to Live anymore because if I were, I'd likely want to lean into the principles we set forth and a lot of places would become ineligible due to the legislative climate.
I wrote about this in Buyographics and the trend has continued. So many factors at play but the overlooked is the rise in hurdles teens have to jump over in state after state.
Incredible generational shift:
In 1997, 43% of 16 year olds had their driver’s license. By 2020, it was just 25%.
Even by age 24, 1 in 5 today don’t have a driver’s license

So in the end, most people wind up with a license, they're just not in as much of a rush these days. The question then becomes how driving behaviors change. (Also, this is the subject of chapter 10 in Buyographics)
