ALT FAS Statement on the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act: With the passage of the Chips Plus Science Act, Congress signals its commitment to American science and innovation. We especially applaud the creation of a new innovation directorate at NSF (the first new NSF directorate in over 30 years, with a cross-cutting mandate and license to use new approaches and models), regional tech hubs, a national S&T strategy, policy to promote U.S. leadership in the bioeconomy, and ambitious authorizations for basic research and research infrastructure. Importantly, Congress is investing in the people who make science happen, with provisions for workforce development, recruiting and retaining domestic talent, and protecting lab scientists from harassment and burnout. Under this collective package, the U.S. R&D ecosystem will not only grow but flourish.
