On November 1, CCHR Florida volunteers stood together in downtown Tampa, in sun and in pouring rain, to call for something simple: an honest investigation into psychiatric drug side effects and their possible link to violence and suicide.
We gathered as forensic psychiatrists met in Tampa for their national annual meeting. Our message was for Florida lawmakers.
In 2026 the Florida Senate passed SB 54 by a vote of 37 to 1. It died in the House without a vote.
We thank Sen. @Barbarasharief , the bill's sponsor, for her work on this legislation.
In 2027, we are asking lawmakers to refile it and finish the job.

If you can't stop taking a psychiatric drug without severe withdrawal — was it actually helping you, or just creating dependence?
Floridians deserve the truth.
The evidence on long-term antidepressant use is weak. The side effects are real. And most patients were never warned. It's time Florida demanded honest mental health care.

Recovery is not lifelong sedation. Florida's mental health system keeps prescribing when it should be listening. Demand better, know your rights.

Antidepressants come with black-box warnings and withdrawal risks most patients are never told about. That's not care — that's a human rights violation. Florida families deserve full informed consent before the first pill is swallowed.

To parents who trusted a facility and watched their child come home worse, not better: you are not alone. CCHR Florida is here to document abuses and push for reforms that put children's safety before corporate profit.

Abuse. Neglect. Trauma. Families from Pennsylvania to Florida share the same story about corporate psychiatric hospitals. When will Florida listen?

From Pennsylvania to Florida, families are telling eerily similar stories about abuse, neglect, and trauma inside psychiatric hospitals. The public is not overreacting — the system is under-responding.

Florida lawmakers don't need another scandal headline to justify action. They already have enough evidence to demand transparency, accountability, and independent oversight of corporate psychiatric chains. The question is whether they will use it.

If a company profits from locking up vulnerable youth, regulators have a moral duty to ask hard questions — not hand over more contracts. Our children are not revenue streams; they are human beings with rights that must be enforced.

No facility that makes money off psychiatric beds should have unchecked power to decide who gets locked in them. That conflict of interest is baked into the current system — and it is hurting children every single day.

When the same corporate provider is linked to lawsuits in multiple states, that is not an isolated incident, it is a pattern. Florida cannot ignore what is happening to children in psychiatric facilities just because the branding looks "trusted."

To every Floridian who felt rushed into a prescription and left alone with the side effects: you are not a statistic, and you are not to blame. It's time our system stopped treating your suffering as acceptable collateral damage.

When top officials finally question aggressive antidepressant prescribing, they are echoing concerns patients have lived for years: why weren't we told the full truth? Silence isn't science — it's betrayal.

Far too many people are told "you'll feel better" without ever hearing about dependence, withdrawal, or the limited evidence behind long-term antidepressant use. That is a human rights issue, not a minor paperwork problem.

When a pill promises to "fix" your life but comes with black-box warnings and withdrawal risks, that is not informed consent- it is marketing. We owe Floridians full disclosure and real alternatives, not chemical quick fixes the data cannot justify.
