I've been asked a few times recently by people younger than me how to get into marketing, and when I ask which area of marketing they're into the answer is always social media. I think often what's behind it is a misapprehension that marketing = social media. And that there's nothing else to marketing. No marketing mix, no ATL or BTL, no consumer psychology, no responsibility for real business results etc etc. Just how to post content that gets likes. It's a problem because without learning the foundations of marketing, the social media execs of today won't be able to progress to marketing management roles later. Also, what happens when the market is saturated with social media talent but generalists, SEO, strategy, advertising, and email marketing talents are rare? The rare talents will be valued higher. Social media salaries are already low, and we're only at the cusp of having a large supply of talent in this area. My advice is there is huge value in being a generalist. I know how to do a bit of everything and that also means I know what I don't know - this is important. Learn marketing, then you can apply it and learn the technical skills of whichever medium you choose, but you'll always have that foundational knowledge to back up your work.
