You don’t always see the load someone’s carrying. If you’re thinking of reaching out, trust that instinct, it could open the door to a conversation they really need. #ruokanyday

Sometimes the quietest student in the room is carrying the heaviest load. Schools are more than places of learning, they're communities where a single conversation can make all the difference. Teachers, counsellors, support staff and peers all have the power to notice when a student isn't quite themselves. And sometimes, all it takes is pausing to ask: 'are you OK?' Make checking in part of your school culture, not just one day a year, but every day 💛 Download our free resources: ruok.org.au/education #ruokanyday

Following yesterday’s tragic incident, the children in your life may be feeling distressed, scared, or overwhelmed. The Child Mind Institute has developed a helpful and practical guide for talking to your children about traumatic events, with specific recommendations for different age groups. We hope this guide, along with other resources available on the R U OK? website, can help you support young people to feel safe and process their emotions. As well as supporting yourself through the complex emotions this incident will evoke. childmind.org/guide/helping-…

This week Anne Hollonds wraps up her 5-year term as National Children’s Commissioner. Throughout her term she has consistently called for federal leadership on child safety and wellbeing and collaboration across state and territory governments. We thank Commissioner Hollonds for her tireless advocacy for: - a cabinet minister for children - child safety and wellbeing to be made a priority for National Cabinet - a national child wellbeing strategy - a national act for children to incorporate the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds reflects on what has been learnt during the past 5 years about the needs of Australia’s most vulnerable children. In 2021 Commissioner Hollonds spoke with over 400 children and young people across Australia to find out what they needed in order to be safe and well, so that their voices could inform government policy and actions. This was during the pandemic, and children were very clear that they wanted governments to listen to them when making decisions that affect their lives. Read more and watch the video: loom.ly/t8K1p5Q

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a day to honour the memories of those we’ve lost to suicide and to offer support to those facing difficult times and those living with the grief of losing someone. The message of ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ encourages us to change how we talk about suicide. To replace silence and stigma for empathy, compassion and action. We all have a role to play in staying connected, showing up for those we care about and helping those struggling access the support they need. Show the people around you that you’re there for them by asking 'are you OK?'. Because a conversation could change a life. #ruokanyday #WSPD2025 #WSPD #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

Our research shows those who are regularly asked, 'are you OK?' report increased feelings of wellbeing. Still, many Australians hesitate to ask someone if they’re OK, because they're worried about intruding or they’re unsure if their actions will help. You can use ALEC (Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check In), our four-step framework, to start an R U OK? conversation and know how to respond if someone tells you they are not OK. There’s good reasons why we have Minister for Women, ‘Women’s Safety’ as National Cabinet priority, & Women’s Budget Statements. But children have none of these accountability mechanisms, so decades of evidenced-based recommendations for child safety and wellbeing sit on shelves.

National Children's Commissioner Anne Hollonds has penned an opinion piece on accountability for child safety and wellbeing published in The Canberra Times and Newcastle Herald. She says, 'The risks to child safety have been known for decades, and the evidence-based recommendations have been sitting on a shelf. How did we end up in this place where governments knew what to do to fix the problems and keep our children safe, but did not act?' Read the full article: loom.ly/YGzJ9PI
