People are sitting in freezing homes because they can’t afford to put the heating on, and as a mould surveyor, I’m seeing the consequences.
We need to stop pretending mould is always just a building problem. Sometimes, behind the damp walls and black mould, there’s a family struggling to make ends meet, choosing between heating their home and paying for other essentials.
Cold walls and condensation create the conditions for mould to grow, and the consequences can seriously affect people’s health, particularly children, older people and those already vulnerable.
We pay enough tax in this country, yet people are afraid to turn on their heating because they’re worried about the next energy bill.
How can we talk about improving public health while people are struggling to keep their own homes warm?
Could the Government reduce taxes on domestic energy further, where applicable, and provide targeted heating support for those who need it most? Helping people afford adequate heating could reduce cold-related health risks and help prevent some of the conditions that allow mould to thrive.
After more than 26 years in the mould industry, I believe we need to look at the bigger picture. You can clean the mould, treat the surfaces and advise on ventilation, but if someone still can’t afford to heat their home, you haven’t addressed the whole problem.
We cannot keep treating the symptoms while ignoring the circumstances contributing to them.
A warm, healthy home should not be a luxury. It should be a basic part of protecting public health.
Am I wrong, or do we need to start treating affordable heating as a public health issue? I’d genuinely like to hear your thoughts.
This is worth sharing as it is a reality in today world of over taxed people 🇬🇧 🙏🔵🔵💜
