The next pandemic could begin anywhere, at any moment. And the risk of a deadly outbreak is only rising. But it doesn’t have to be that way. CEPI 3.0 is our plan to move the world from reactive response to proactive protection

Through the lens of the current Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in DRC, our panel focused on three interconnected priorities: 🔬 Innovation in knowledge and technologies, so we have the scientific tools to respond faster and more effectively 🤝Innovation in partnerships, financing and networks, so no single actor carries the burden alone 🌐Bringing innovations to the populations who need them most, because life-saving innovations only matter if they reach the most vulnerable populations.

Final preparations are underway for Tumaini, which means “hope” in Swahili. This pivotal Phase 2/3 clinical trial will evaluate the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), including Ervebo which is currently licensed for use to prevent Ebola virus (EBOV). The trial will support the Government-led response to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Subject to ethical and regulatory approval, it is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Read more about the trial here: cepi.net/final-preparations-…

The adoption of the Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response marks an important step towards strengthening the world’s defences against future pandemics. CEPI warmly welcomes the inclusion of the goal of making vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics available within the first 100 days of a pandemic threat. Previously this goal – known as the 100 Days Mission – has been carried by the G7 and G20. Now the Declaration is adopted, it becomes a target owned by the UN membership. CEPI 3.0 – our 2027-2031 strategy – aims to drive the 100 Days Mission towards an operational reality. It will invest in the capabilities needed to develop safe and effective vaccines faster, more reliably and more equitably: advancing vaccines against the most dangerous pathogens and viral families, strengthening platform technologies, and building global and regional R&D networks that can respond swiftly wherever threats emerge. This goal is within reach - now we must deliver. CEPI and our 100 Days Mission partners stand ready to help turn the Declaration into results that make speed and equity the norm, not the exception, in pandemic preparedness and response.
.@WHO welcomes the adoption of the #UNGA Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, and commends co-facilitators Armenia and Rwanda for their leadership in building consensus. This important milestone reflects a shared commitment to equity, global solidarity and collective action to make the world safer from future pandemics. We also welcome the ambition to successfully conclude negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing Annex. who.int/news/item/12-10-2026…

Pandemics are one of 17 catastrophic global threats to health and human survival this century, alongside nuclear conflict, climate change and obesity. But their impact can be reduced through collective action and investment in preparedness. That’s the finding of the new @TheLancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health, published yesterday. CEPI Board Chair Hon Prof Jane Halton is one of the expert Commissioners. Read it here: thelancet.com/commissions-do…

But we know how to reduce the risk, through speed, R&D readiness and equitable access. The Commission calls for a shift from reaction to prevention and preparedness, which is exactly what CEPI 3.0 and the 100 Days Mission are designed to deliver: safe, effective vaccines within 100 days of a pandemic threat being identified.

The 17 threats don’t exist in isolation, and neither do the solutions. The Commission recommends building threat-ready health systems, backing breakthrough innovation and tracking progress against emerging risks. Health underpins prosperity, security and resilience, so investing in preparedness is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect us all.

SFTS, or Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome, is a tick-borne virus that kills around one in ten people diagnosed with it in Japan. In 2025, cases reached record highs – and there's no vaccine to protect against it. In Nagasaki, scientists supported by CEPI are exploring whether a new type of mRNA vaccine designed with artificial intelligence and delivered in an innovative protective coating, known as a ‘nanaoball’, could change that, and at the same time help the world respond faster to the next Disease X.
