Back in the 1960s, the US did $9bn in sovereign lending a year. That died out in the 1980s. Time to bring it back. From a new paper by Clemence Landers Justin Hurley and Erin Collinson.

Building on the Triple Agenda report, the 2024 G20 Roadmap set out 13 recommendations for bigger, better, and more effective multilateral development banks. This report asks how far the MDBs have delivered, and how far they still have to go.
A joint publication of @CGDev, @ODI_Global, and ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ฅ, authored by Dr. Homi Kharas and @MasoodA_, it finds the MDB response has been broad-based and, by past standards, close to dramatic: expanded balance-sheet headroom while preserving credit ratings, record private mobilisation, and more joint working as a system, with some lending timelines cut from 19 months to 9.
Yet it still falls short of what 2026 demands. Commitments have grown just 1% a year in real terms since 2000, much of the new headroom remains unused, and private mobilisation has fallen in low-income countries, even as developing economies face slowing growth and rising vulnerability. The report makes the case for an urgent push on sustainable infrastructure and human capital.

How can countries prepare workers for an AI-driven future? ๐ผ
At the #WBGMeetings, I sat down with Gabriel Demombynes of the @WorldBankGroup to discuss how #AI could reshape labor markets and why foundational skills like literacy and numeracy remain essential.
On the sidelines of the Annual Meetings in Bangkok this year, ICRIER, in partnership with @CGDev, organised a discussion today on The event marked the launch of the new report "๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ: ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ ๐๐๐,โ produced by researchers from four independent think tanks, including ICRIER.
Two years after the 2024 G20 Roadmap on MDB reform, the report finds the direction of travel is right, but the pace is not. Commitments have grown marginally, much of the new headroom sits unused, and private capital mobilisation has fallen in low-income countries.
Dr. @ShekharAiyar, Director and Chief Executive, ICRIER, delivered the welcome remarks, and Hans Peter Lankes (@ODI_Global) presented the reportโs conclusions. The panel featured Nadia Calviรฑo (European Investment Bank (@EIB) and Ilan Goldfajn (@the_IDB), moderated by Masood Ahmed (CGD).
We also thank Marc Uzan and @The_RBWC for creating an excellent platform for hosting the discussion.

How resilient is the global economy, and who bears the greatest risks when that resilience is tested?
At the #WBGMeetings, I've been reflecting on the vulnerabilities beneath the optimistic economic outlook, particularly the risks facing low- and middle-income countries.

Interesting discussion with think tank leaders and development partners in Bangkok on the future of multilateral development banks.
MDBs have made real progress in recent years, from increasing lending capacity to mobilizing more private capital and working more closely together.
MDBs need to continue translating that progress into measurable results.

Most people think of China's belt n road - but it's multilateral finance has risen significantly - we analyse what orgs China is funding and how its role in World Bank and UN governance is changing.
With the US and others withdrawing, China is doing more.
#China's contributions to multilateral development institutions have grown more than tenfold since 2010, exceeding $3B in 2024.
But its funding remains highly selective.
New analysis by @BeaCichocka and @EconMitch explores what this means for multilateral reform.
