Responding to President Xi Jinping’s speech (22 October 2026) commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Long March, Communist Party of Britain general secretary, Alex Gordon said: “All world-historical events of human civilisation, revolutions in class relations, technology, culture and environment are founded on people’s struggles. As President Xi Jinping has said, the revolutionary victory of the Long March from 1934 to 1936 belongs to the Communist Party of China, the heroic Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army and to the Chinese people. Their victory still echoes around the world 90 years later. In 1938, British Communist, James Klugmann led a delegation of the World Student Association to Yan'an to witness China’s resistance to Japanese imperialism. Today, we must follow their example, learning from Chinese Marxism, rejecting dogmatism and seeking truth from facts. Sixty years ago this morning, the tip above Aberfan collapsed. 144 people were killed, 116 of them children, just minutes after finishing morning assembly. The tribunal laid the blame entirely on the Coal Board. Yet no one was prosecuted, and no one was sacked. To make matters worse, the government raided the disaster fund, money donated by working-class people, to clear the remaining tips. Today, more than 2,500 coal tips still sit across Wales, with 85 rated high-risk. The funding allocated to make them safe falls drastically short. It is the same fundamental disregard for working-class lives, over and over again. Grenfell. Hillsborough. The names change, but the pattern stays the same.
