The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) continues to see significant financial losses associated with fraud in 2026. In the first six months of the year, Canadians reported approximately $351 million in losses to the CAFC. While investment fraud continues to account for the highest reported dollar loss, several fraud types are showing notable activity when compared with 2025, including spear phishing, bank investigator fraud, extortion and recovery fraud.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre wants to warn Canadians about frauds targeting people who own or use cryptocurrency wallets. Fraudsters may try to gain access to a wallet, steal cryptocurrency, or trick victims into sharing private information.
Cryptocurrency transactions are difficult to reverse. Once cryptocurrency is sent or stolen, it may be difficult or impossible to recover. People who have already lost cryptocurrency may also be targeted again by fraudsters who claim they can recover the funds. #kNOwfraud

March is Fraud Prevention Month. This year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is focused on exposing fraud as a serious and organized crime, not an isolated mistake or a victimless offence. The campaign will highlight the scale and impact of fraud, its borderless nature, the tools fraudsters use to make their attacks more sophisticated, and how Canadians can protect themselves through collective action like reporting to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

💔Every year around Valentine’s Day, fraudsters target unsuspecting victims who are looking for love and/or companionship.
Relationship fraud happens when no one is looking. It occurs on dating websites, social media and through wrong number text messages known as conversational attacks. The fraudster’s primary goal is to escalate initial communications into a trusting relationship. This can include professions of love, offers of support, financial advice or other emotional lures.
Understanding how these frauds operate and knowing the common red flags is key to protecting yourself and others.

🚨FRAUD ALERT!
Fraudsters are creating fake social media ads and posts claiming to be @rcmpgrcpolice , FINTRAC, @JusticeCanadaEN or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. These posts appear as though it is a survey coming from the Government with a link to click and may also promise to help recover lost fund.
If you click the link, you risk exposing your personal and financial information.
You will not be taken to a Government of Canada website.
Government of Canada agencies do not contact victims through social media ads or offer fund recovery services online.
If you have already been affected by fraud, report it directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

With more Canadians travelling over the holidays, we’re seeing an increase in fake text messages claiming you owe toll fees or speeding fines.
Government agencies and toll companies won’t demand immediate payment by text message. If you get one of these messages, report it and don’t click the link. Watch our phishing awareness video here: youtu.be/I1ttBC-LQZA #HolidayFraud #kNOwfraud #showmetheFRAUD #BeScamSmart

A surprise message saying you’ve won a prize or vacation can feel exciting, but if you never entered a contest, it’s likely fraud.
Fraudsters may ask for fees, taxes, or personal information before you can “claim” your prize. Real prizes don’t require upfront payments.

Holiday safety starts with candle and decoration safety. Keep candles away from anything that can burn, use candles in sturdy containers that will not fall over, never leave lit candles unattended and choose flameless candles when possible.

Fraudsters don’t take holidays off. They use the season to build trust, strengthen emotional connections, and eventually ask for money, gift cards, or crypto.
If someone you’ve never met in person is asking for financial help or offering to “coach” you how to invest, it’s a major warning sign. For more on relationship and romance fraud: antifraudcentre.ca/scams-fra… #HolidayFraud #kNOwfraud #showmetheFRAUD #BeScamSmart

This week’s bulletin highlights that keeping your devices up to date is one of the most effective ways to prevent identity theft and identity fraud in the cyber environment.
Fraudsters exploit weaknesses in old operating systems, browsers, and apps to steal personal information. Once they have your data, they can impersonate you to commit fraud by opening new accounts, applying for credit or accessing government benefits in your name.

By learning how criminals operate and taking simple steps today, you can build strong cyber habits that will safeguard your money, your identity, and your future.

#BackToSchool photos are special, but oversharing can put children at risk. Protect your child’s privacy by avoiding:
• School names, logos or signs
• After-school activities or teams
• Personal details like name, age or grade
• Background clues such as bus numbers or street names
Even on private accounts, posts can be saved or shared. Create memories while keeping your child safe.
