Rached Ghannouchi’s message from inside prison a year after his arrest🕊️🇹🇳
One year in prison
As one year passes since my detention, I have been asking myself two questions: Was it necessary to make that speech during the National Salvation Front event (for which I was arrested), or could what happened have been avoided? And what have I accomplished during this past year?
As for the first question, I came to the following conclusion: What happened was not an accident. My speech that night was appropriate to the events that took place in our country on 25 July, 2021 - a coup, which expresses authoritarian and absolute rule. Coups embody one-man rule, as was expressed in the coup’s very first declaration, the dissolution of constitutional institutions and the introduction of rule by executive decree.
Our mistake was not that we were the first to declare that what had taken place was a coup and that we would resist it peacefully within the framework of the law and the constitution. Our mistake was in endorsing an unsuitable person in the 2019 presidential elections. If the Tunisian revolution were a book, we would not find within it a single line about him.
We did not hesitate to announce that it was a coup, and we conveyed this message clearly to the people and the world, as it really was.
Our fundamental disagreement with this path has a clear basis. It is not a partial disagreement that can be glossed over with words at an event.
We gave our votes to this individual - the most precious thing a political party has - only to find ourselves faced with a choice between two options: democracy or a return to one-man rule. This one-man rule, extending from Sadok Bey to Bourguiba and Ben Ali, was interrupted by the Tunisian revolution, only to return after the coup.
We do not regret our decision. What we regret is giving confidence to those who took the country back to the days of one-man rule.
The proof that we took the right path is that we were joined by most political parties and civil society groups from across the spectrum. The emergence of the National Salvation Front is further proof that this was the correct path, united in rejecting one-man rule. One man has usurped power from the judiciary and Parliament, considers them to be mere functionaries and placed all power in his hands.
As for the second question, I reached the following conclusion: What is required of a political prisoner is steadfastness because people enter prison feeling motivated by their ideas only to face the grim reality that prison often breaks one’s resolve. Thus, we find many groups that were destroyed by prison. There, they moved from evaluation and self-criticism to self-flagellation and pointing the finger of blame at themselves, although the only reason they were in prison was because they had directed blame at the authorities.
I am thankful that all the political prisoners are steadfast and none of them has sought a pardon from those in power. They remain steadfast in their position that what took place was a coup and a counter-revolution that we will all resist through the values of democracy, peaceful struggle, and preserving the core of the opposition.
The second duty of a political prisoner is to maintain his/her health, and we try as much as possible to do that. Prison is a denial of one’s humanity. Even prophets were not threatened with imprisonment for their ideas, except by Pharaoh. He used such threats because he, being the tyrant he was, knew that prison was the most brutal institution ever invented by mankind because it deprives humans of their freedom, while God created them free.

Yes. Despite Saied’s pronouncements today—he said he’s “certain we’re on the right track” & Tunisia will “realise the people’s hopes”—Tunisians are almost completely checked out of his project.
And few ppl, even experts, can explain how the entities being elected will function.
