ALT After attending a Bat survey course in Nottinghamshire I was invited to go look for larvae in Derbyshire by my Glow-worm mentor Jim Alder. I had already resolved to study Scottish Glow-worms but had no luck yet finding larvae in Scotland and it was too soon for glowing season. Just a standard rock right? This was the 3rd rock (not under the Sun but a cool damp day) I chose. Most entomologists know the 'itch' of a good rock. Scratch that itch I did. What I found has changed my life more than I ever thought it could. I'm not an emotional person, I'm a tough ex-shepherd that doesn't get so much as a stinging eye at Bambi. But I cried! Yup that larva made me cry dammit. Here in Britain was my first sighting of a Firefly! I've witnessed Reds rutting, Otter playing, Salmon spawning, Golden Eagle, Pine Marten eating my offered pizza out of my hand (I was drunk in my defence) during my career in farming. But this wee Firefly species out classed them all.
